In my experience semi formal is the least dressy of the options White tie= most formal, tuxedo and formal evening gowns black tie= tux and floor length dresses with more options in fabrics/ styles formal or black tie optional= tux or suit and floor length dress or fancy cocktail dress cocktail= suit and tie and cocktail dresses (not floor length) semi formal/ dressy casual= lot of flexibility here so I would add suggestions for guests. For⁤mal is usually floor-length or at least a very luxe-looking midi. Think fabrics like chiffon, silk, satin, lace, or something with beading, plus more polished hair and makeup and dressier shoes. Semi-formal can be a nice cocktail dress, a simple chiffon maxi, or even a dressy jumpsuit, as long as it doesn’t come off as a casual sundress or work dress. When I was unsure about a black tie-optional wedding, I just rented a long dress from Re⁤nt the Run⁤way so I didn’t have to buy something I’d only wear once. For a more semi-formal event, I just wore a shorter dress I already had. If you’re unsure, it’s better to aim slightly dressier than you think and keep accessories and shoes on the nicer side.
