RS-232 - Wikipedia
1 week ago - In October 1963, the EIA published its first revision, EIA RS-232-A. This revision introduced iterative improvements including different connector types and different voltage ranges. In October 1965, the EIA published EIA RS-232-B. This revision increased the capacitance specifications to allow longer cable lengths and increase signal timing. It also dropped the voltage from 25 Vpp to 15 Vpp. In August of 1969, the EIA published EIA RS-232-C: Interface Between Data Terminal Equipment and Data Communication Equipment Employing Serial Binary Data Interchange.

Since RS232 devices signal using higher voltages, the adapter also needs a "level shifter" to boost the signal voltage up to the level expected by the RS232 receiver and a transient suppressor to protect the USB circuitry from damage. What is the use of this cable?
RS-232 Serial port to RJ11 (maybe RJ12). Lots of possible devices such as a 2-line LCD display, scale, barcode scanner, cash drawer, etc. Pretty common in PoS (Point of Sale) systems. More on reddit.com
Nowadays what are the uses of serial ports?
They work. They're the 'simplest' form of communication that almost every chip supports. I would bet even your phone has UART pads broken out. More on reddit.com
Are there still new laptops that can be had with an RS-232 serial connector onboard?
If you are putting together a crash bag I'm sure you'll already need to have a couple of db9 to rj45 cisco style console adapter cables. Probably also a couple of Micro-USB to USBA/C cables as well for switches that use that for console and maybe even a couple of db9 gender changers and null/crossover adapters. With all that stuff you might as well just add a USB-Serial cable rather then trying to find a laptop with a serial port and then being stuck if something happens to the laptop. I picked up a bunch of Keyspan/Tripp Lite USA-19HS back in the day and they've been working great. I've found that it's easy to find a USB to Serial cable that works at 9600 but most of the cheap ones break down if you try to connect at 115200. One important thing to include in your kit is a USB stick with drivers on it for whatever USB to Serial cable you settle on. More on reddit.com

The most popular of these is the DE-9, commonly (and incorrectly) referred to as DB9. Either or both of these connectors can be used for a serial cable. There are two general types of RS-232 serial cables: standard straight through cables (wired 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, etc.), and null modem cables.

What Is RS232 and What Is It Used For? - RealPars
One important thing to remember if you find yourself using RS232 devices is that there are actually two different types. DTE stands for Data Terminal Equipment. A common example of this is a computer. DCE stands for Data Communications Equipment. An example of DCE is a modem. The reason this is important is because two DTE or two DCE devices cannot talk to each other without some help. This is typically done by using a reverse (null-modem) RS232 cable connection to connect the devices.

Yes - I would call that a Null Modem cable.
If the cable you get (or make) doesn't work, my first debugging step for serial communications is to swap connections on pins 2 and 3. (Transmit and Receive data)

Since the TXD (3) of one side is connected with the RXD (2) of the other, this is indeed a null-modem cable. Normal serial cables have pins 2 and 3 connected straight through, and the DCE is responsible for cross-connecting them internally.

November 4, 2025 - As we have seen, the cable-length specification once included in the RS-232 standard has been replaced by a maximum load-capacitance specification of 2500pF. To determine the total length of cable allowed, one must determine the total line capacitance. Figure 6 shows a simple approximation for the total line capacitance of a conductor.

There are two versions of the serial port for the RMC product. The current style is a male DTE DB9. Early production RMCs have a female DTE DB9. However, because both connectors are DTE, the wiring is the same, so only a gender changer is needed to convert a cable between the two ports.

August 18, 2021 - Only very few computers have been manufactured where both serial RS232 channels are implemented. Examples of this are the Sun SparcStation 10 and 20 models and the Dec Alpha Multia. Also on a number of Telebit modem models the secondary channel is present. It can be used to query the modem status while the modem is on-line and busy communicating. On personal computers, the smaller DB9 version is more commonly used today. The diagrams show the signals common to both connector types in black.
