Javascript dev here. It really depends on what you want to do. I don’t think Java or javascript are going away any time soon. Android apps (Java primarily, you can use js sorta) are not going to go out of style. Web apps will always be necessary. If you want to pick up development quicker javascript is the way to go. If you don’t mind having a learning curve (which you could argue is better for you in the long run) try Java out. Answer from Alexisbestpony on reddit.com

Learning Java or Javascript?
Hi, I know a little about Javascript and Java, both at almost equal level I would say (but a little more Javascript with Node.js and React.js I would say). I would like to immerse myself deeply into either Java or Javascript, but I don’t know which language to chose. More on forum.freecodecamp.org

Start with JavaScript or Java?
On July 1st, a change to Reddit's API pricing will come into effect. Several developers of commercial third-party apps have announced that this change will compel them to shut down their apps. At least one accessibility-focused non-commercial third party app will continue to be available free of charge. If you want to express your strong disagreement with the API pricing change or with Reddit's response to the backlash, you may want to consider the following options: Limiting your involvement with Reddit, or Temporarily refraining from using Reddit Cancelling your subscription of Reddit Premium as a way to voice your protest. Learn Java or JavaScript?

Technically you can do both. Build a web app using the Spring data REST backend (Java) and a React (JavaScript) frontend. https://spring.io/guides/tutorials/react-and-spring-data-rest/

It will be challenging, but great experience.

Which is better: Java or JavaScript?
Deciding between Java and JavaScript isn’t about which is 'better.' They’re distinct programming languages with unique strengths and applications. Java is a compiled language that operates on the server side, crafting complex desktop applications and Android apps. JavaScript, a lightweight and interpreted scripting language, operates in web browsers and helps front-end developers create interactive web pages.

February 14, 2025 - If you learn Java first and JavaScript a lot of the time you will be like: “Oh, I see why they did that!”. That’s because you know what is happening “under the hood”. On the other hand, if you have experience with languages like C# or C++, I would advise you to learn JavaScript because it is a scripting and primarily a functional language.
