No, you want either a spd-sx style pad or a brain for the one pad to get midi. There’s ways around it with 1/4 midi inputs but they aren’t super responsive from what I’ve heard. Answer from DrummerMiles on reddit.com

r/drums on Reddit: Single Drum Pad as MIDI Controller?

Does anybody here know if I can use a single E-Drum/V-Drum trigger pad WITHOUT a module as a MIDI controller?

I'm trying to avoid a module since I already have all my samples in EZDrummer. I'm just looking for a simple solution to tracking drum parts with sticks rather than my fingers on tiny little pads.

And I'm aware that there are larger, dedicated, more advanced pads that do this. Some with multiple zones and such... but single trigger pads are far less expensive, so I'm really hoping there's a way!

Hope this question makes sense, thanks!

So I have an MPC and/or a Force that I set up next to the kit to run a click, bass lines, and synths to play along with. I'd like to get a midi controller with 8 or 9 pads so I can more easily trigger samples with the sticks. Obviously the SPD SX Pro is the cream of the crop in terms of capability, but since it's just a controller that I need, I really don't see any reason to shell out $1k for a bunch of features I won't use. The Alesis models looked good, but I read a lot about cross striking, which I'd like to avoid. What's my best option here?

Hi, I am looking for MIDI pads to play percussion parts. I'm happy to just output MIDI and drive a VST with samples in it. I'm hoping for something with at least six pads and very good dynamic sensitivity. I considered the Behringer LM Drum as an inexpensive controller but reports are that the sensitivity is not very good. Any recommendations for new or older products that would do what I'm looking for? My use would be to create percussion parts using less conventional samples like tabla.

All I want is something to be used with Ableton, I don't need it to have a brain. And all the good ones are so expensive because they come with that and all these samples. I don’t need to drop $1000-$1500 on a Roland SPD-SX when all I need are the pads.

Is there one that exists that I don't know about?

I'm looking to buy my first MIDI & DAW setup. Do you think it's better to have a separate MIDI keyboard and drum pads, or to have a single instrument that combines them?

I'm looking at the price range of ~$150 to $250. Recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Howdy All

*tl;dr - me want to finger drum. MPC Studio or NI Mikro better? Can use in FL Studio?*

I'm going to be ordering some news stuff soon (my partner's getting into streaming, so I'm getting them setup, but need to throw something in for me to "get free shipping, of course ;)"). I'm looking at maybe getting a MIDI drum pad, so I can practice finger drumming and hopefully get a bit more creative with my loops.

I've currently got my eyes on the AKAI MPC Studio / NI Maschine Mikro MK3. Both are very tempting for me, but I'm struggling to figure out where to go from there. I'm currently using FL Studio for music making, and will most likely be setting them up to control FPC inside of FL. Now, I'm aware that you're able to use the MPC software inside FL (though it does look a bit convoluted to my newbie eyes), I'd assume the Maschine is similar also?

From what I've read & watched, this is what I've taken away:

  • MPC - Good Pads, better for sample chopping, doesn't work very well for triggering patterns

  • Mikro - Good Pads, better for live performing, easier to work with from a software standpoint

I honestly think I'm leaning more towards the AKAI currently, but I've heard a lot of reviews about their more budget stuff being of lower quality. I don't know, what you all think? Am I deluded for looking at these 2 specifically? Am I missing something obvious (please don't mention Novation, I don't want to go through the pain of getting that to work in FL).

Thanks in advance

Hi all,

Apologies if this isn’t the right place for this. Basically I don’t have a drum set, and when I create music using percussion-type sounds it’s always samples/VSTs.

In the past I’ve always triggered midi via a midi keyboard for percussion. However I’m realizing… why haven’t I bought an actual midi drum pad to do this instead? I am sure I will get significantly more expressiveness out of my performances this way.

However I’m looking for this and the options are surprisingly light! I’d like something that fits the following:

Under $300 Preferably 4 or more different triggers Can be used with sticks or hands and is velocity-sensitive Works well within a DAW for me to easily program what things I want triggered.

The two I’ve found that fit this are the boppad and kat ktm1p but both of those have pretty meh reviews and I’m wondering if there’s something else I should be looking at.

Do any of you have any experience with those and/or any other recommendations?

r/edrums on Reddit: Recommendations For Midi Sample Pad To Hit With Drum Sticks And Save On Space?
March 30, 2024 -

Hey there, I'm downsizing from my electric drum kit and am asking for recommendations for some kind of 4 pad setup that allows me to hit pads with drum sticks. Asking since I mostly record my own drum parts with Addictive Drums so I really just need something that's small and responsive but I can still hit with drum sticks and I can use via Midi.

Not interested in finger pad style drumming tbh.

Something that's like a circle or square with 4 pads for hi hat, bass toms and snare.

Are there any Roland type devices for this or Alesis type stuff? Thanks.

We’re having to downsize and the Alesis Mesh nitro has to go. For a budget kit, I loved it. I’ve got a number of decent virtual instrument kits, but can’t find a compact midi controller that works the way I want, mainly because they lack easy to set up hi-hat controls.

What are you all using?

If you're talking pad controllers purely for controlling software VST and some finger drumming, the Maschine Mikro will be a sweet option. The bigger MK3 is fun if you're into using it with the Maschine 2 software and it being a pretty complex and highly functional groovebox. If your VST allows it the MK3 has knobs you can assign to various parameters to add a little flexibility to what you get out of a single kit without having to grab your mouse+kB, like snare trigger position, open HH position (between closed and open) etc. Novation Launchpad X and Pro have nice playable pads in an 8x8 layout though the pads are pretty small in comparison to a decent 4x4 controller. With these devices you kind of have to accept the trade offs vs an e-kit though. You'll have to get a little creative for cymbal chokes or live without. I tend to double up on kick, snare, and closed HH pads to make it easier to play rolls on them. I have 3 pads for my hi-hats, two for closed one for open. Playing a closed HH mutes the open HH. Your other option that still lets you use sticks is maybe a Roland SPD. Or I have a Yamaha DTX M12 that is an excellent midi controller, but it's old, the menus and UI are very dated. It's not a bad unit despite that but it led to me building an entire kit around it, which is awesome, but it's also a monstrosity. IT has additional trigger inputs, but only one of them is mutli-zone. When the kit reached its final form I have just the hi-hat controller plugged into the M12, controlling via midi another drum module my multi-zone pads and kick trigger are plugged into.

I was looking into it and with the help of fellow redditors I came to the conclusion that I'll order an edrumin 4 or 8 in order to make a very compact kick/snare/HH controlling BFD3, in addition to my already owned Nord Drum 3p.

I've heard about a bunch of drum pad controllers that are really nice to speed up workflow & such but they're really pricy. wondering if there's a good budget option to start me off with a viable controller ( around $200CAD or less). I already have a nice midi keyboard I like, but the pads on it just are garbage lol and clearly not meant for finger drumming.

I have a friend who is learning drums, and I think it would be awesome if he could practice his skills while using one of my drum machines/samplers (I have the 404mk2, volca drum and volca kick).

After looking online, I’m honestly surprised by the lack of options. There are a few units out there (like the Roland octapad) but there don’t seem to be a ton of options and they all seek kind of expensive. Am I missing something?
