Looking at the motion, or echo, of the effect it seems a lot like some form of radial gradient/ripple. As I recall the time effect is run across a grayscale ramp. Try with one wave expanding out then move to anther collapsing in. It may be two waves blended together but it could be just the one stretching the gradient from the center. It's all wibbly wobbly timey wimey anyways. Answer from kichigai-ichiban on reddit.com

Slit Scan Effect in Adobe After Effects
The Slit Scan Effect scans your footage from one side to another, freezing pixels as it moves. This creates surreal, trippy trails behind moving objects, a look popularized in phone filters. Now, you can achieve the same effect in Adobe After Effects with this customizable template.

I’ve spent the past 12 hours trying to replicate this clip. It looks like a time displacement effect that’s mapped to luma values, I can’t figure out though how they’re stretching the time displaced portions. My time displacement creates two instances that only get pushed further apart the longer the time delay. Any ideas on breaking this down would go a mile

Always wanted to try shooting some slitscan for real tho never had the time/money for film stock and the access to a 16mm rostrum camera at the same time back in Uni days 🙁 · Can anyone out there who is adept at 3D layering decipher how this guy created this effect · Not sure what you mean by this, he explains in the link exactly how it was done and there’s no 3D or after effects comp camera involved at all, just lots of 2d layers offset in time.
