Willem looked awkward reading his lines, and sketches where he had to play off himself didn’t do him any favors, like the Beauty and the Beast mirror sketch. And speaking of, did a fifth grader join the writing staff? Halfway through the “Blowing Yourself” sketch, I’d heard enough dick jokes for the rest of the year.

January 30, 2022 - We’ve seen this basic sketch before, but it was still funny seeing all the clever ways Mikey Day -- who is such a good straight man -- and Willem Dafoe could say innocent things that immediately sound awful under the context of the wrong book title, “Blowing Yourself.” Honestly, we expected more interruptions from Bowen Yang and Ego Nwodim as the newscasters when the graphics kept making things worse.

But what does Maurice get up to while he’s by himself? On paper, this sketch is basically about an old guy getting ready to masturbate while he’s alone. And yet, Willem Dafoe turns this into art.

January 30, 2022 - Day’s straight man routine was at its best here, against Thompson’s Frank Thomas, Kyle Mooney’s Doug Flutie, and Dafoe’s Willem Dafoe, acknowledging the weirdness of the Nugenix’s commercials without getting too big (no upsetting pun intended). Even funnier was how long it actually took for the fake ad to even say Nugenix, as it was so wrapped up in the “You can’t get hard anymore.” and “Oh, now he’s interested.” repeated bits. ... As tends to be the case, a Please Don’t Destroy sketch airing on “SNL” basically means a Please Don’t Destroy Sketch was one of the best sketches on that week’s “SNL.” Though, in this sketch’s case, it was clearly the star power of Connor that really drove things home.

January 30, 2022 - The entire night of sketches ranged from Dafoe talking about erectile dysfunction medication as himself alongside athletes, Dafoe's take on "Crazy Ole Maurice" from Beauty and the Beast, and now this: an intern. It was wonderful and started off with Dafoe simply talking about trying to just busy himself with work in his retirement.
