Look for distinctive bright yellow edges around brown or dead circular patches in your lawn - that yellow ring means the fungus is actively spreading. Active brown patch typically appears in low-lying, damp, or shaded areas first, especially during fall when nighttime temperatures drop to the 60s but days are still in the 80s.
