My Speed Queen Review — Shalice Noel
March 17, 2023 - Despite hearing recommendations for different brands, I was repeatedly advised to consider a Speed Queen. Unfortunately, they were in high demand, and many distributors were sold out with lengthy waiting lists. As a busy mom of five, waiting six months for a washer and dryer simply wasn't feasible. So, I reluctantly opted for an LG front loader, which never quite met my expectations in terms of cleaning effectiveness. Needless to say, I was thrilled to replace it. Then came the TC5 top loader from Speed Queen.

Speed Queen Product Review - The Junk Parlor
February 10, 2022 - I recognized the washer because I bought the same one Speed Queen TR5 model and I have been very disappointed with its quality. Clothes just don’t come out clean. It helps some if you wash smaller loads and pretreat stains but if it’s a tough stain or something really soiled it’s going to need to be prewashed (yep, washed before putting in the washing machine) beforehand to remove the majority of dirt.

Unpopular opinion, I hate my Speed Queen
There’s a lot of fetishizing of speed queen around here but I’m pretty unconvinced. As far as I can tell they’re loud, use a lot of energy, use a lot of water, beat your clothing up and don’t clean very well. With that as the background, the fact that they never die seems more like a curse than a positive attribute. More on reddit.com

Husband is looking at buying a Speed Queen washer
My repairman said when my Maytag dies to go get a top loading Speed Queen, not the top of the line, and it will last forever and clean clothes better. More on reddit.com

Are speed queen washers and dryers that good?
I used to be a fan of whirlpool, but now I work on too many brand new ones. I don't ever get calls for speed queens, especially the tc5000's Machines in general break pretty quickly now, so get the one's with the biggest warranty, speed queen usually gives 5-10 years. Make sure you have warranty authorized techs in your area so that you aren't waiting 3 months for a warranty repair. More on reddit.com

Are Speed Queens actually good washer/dryers
The only thing I’ve “missed” with my Speed Queen is not being told, “honestly, it would be cheaper to buy a new washer and dryer than try to repair this,” which was what I was told with my prior, non-SQ set. To me, the question of washer and dryer pros and cons has two parts though- brand and front or top load. I’ve taken my Speed Queen dryer apart and put it back together again with tools I already had on hand. I didn’t know what I was doing, and disassembled a bunch of things I didn’t need to but didn’t know better. When I figured out what I needed and went to the appliance parts warehouse, I asked the guys who worked there what washer and dryer they would own if they had children and lots of laundry. It was unanimous and they didn’t bat an eye - Speed Queen. They said they were just better made. When I asked the repair man who came out to fix my dishwasher what clothes washer and dryer he thought were the best - Speed Queen. In my experience, Speed Queens are tanks. Sturdy, straightforward, reparable tanks. As to the front or top-loading part: my washer uses more water than a front loader. It takes more water to fill a vertical tub than to fill only the bottom of a horizontal tub and toss it about. Depending on where you live, that additional water usage could be a significant factor. And, if you think about the act of washing clothes on a washboard, or any other “old fashioned” method, you are counting on a combination of friction and soap to bond with and dislodge the dirt/oil/grime and carry it away when the garment is rinsed. The friction of clothes tumbling against each other, with detergent, is the attempt at replication of that mechanism with an electric machine. That friction that dislodges dirt also wears the fibers of clothing fabric. An agitator causes more of that friction. Whether that is a positive or negative thing is a matter of perspective, I think. For me, I prefer the increased friction. Something else I prefer about my top loading washer is the ability to soak something like a duvet or quilt overnight. All of the duvet is completely immersed in water, and whatever detergent I’ve added, all night long. I wash the king-sized quilt from my bed in my top-loading Speed Queen every week. If I leave the laundry room and realize I forgot to wash the hand towel from the bathroom, and then find where I dropped a dirty sock on my way down the stairs, I can grab both, go back to the laundry room, raise the lid, and toss them in. I don’t have to wait for another load, or drain this load, add them in, and restart the cycle. And, maybe most important to me, what you “miss” when you get a top loading washer is the maintenance and risk that comes with the front-loading seal. I don’t have to think about my washer smelling musty or my seal growing mold. But more than that, I don’t have to worry about a seal failing and flooding my house with that many gallons of water. The seals on front loaders are better now, and there aren’t as many issues as there were at first, but there is still far greater risk that the seal on the door of a front loading washer will fail and dump gallons and gallons of water on the floor than that some hole is going to open up in the steel tub of my top loader and cause major damage to my flooring, subfloor, drywall, and trim. Laundromats are made for that sort of event; my house is not. I’d much rather have a top loader. So for me, I haven’t missed a thing by switching to a top-loading Speed Queen. But I think it comes down to what factors are most significant to any given person. More on reddit.com

My Review of the Speed Queen Top Load Washer - Lorain Furniture
April 20, 2017 - Over sized motor can easily handle anything you can load in it. The outer tub is made of steel (the other brands are plastic) which basically prevents any disgusting goo from building up in your machine, causing it to get stinky. The all-steel transmission, with steel gears will quite literally never go bad. I service some really old speed queens, and have yet to ever change a transmission. Even under intense use, the washer will easily outlast its 5 year warranty.

December 6, 2023 -

I recently purchased a TC500 and DR500 Speed Queen washing machine and dryer based on all of the positive reviews. I would honestly return them if I could. The dryer has been repaired twice in the one year of ownership and the washing machine constantly leaves water marks and stains on clothing. The genesis of this post was after washing my athletics, which usually go in the upstairs front loader, and they came out just as dirty as when I put them in. I ran the cycle on delicate and it’s honestly a joke. My 6 year old apartment sized front loader does an infinitely better job and uses a fraction of the water.

r/laundry on Reddit: Husband is looking at buying a Speed Queen washer
October 12, 2024 -

We have a Samsung washer now and it’s garbage. It’s been repaired quite a few times in the 5ish years we’ve owned it. It’s new thing is not adding much water and running an entire cycle without water or dispensing any detergent. I don’t have time to babysit the thing. Husband started researching and talking to coworkers about the Samsung and his coworkers suggested a Speed Queen. I know I’ve seen them mentioned in this group, but usually skipped the posts because it wasn’t relevant to me.

Anything we should know before purchasing one? Any tips and tricks? Good or bad experiences?

Thanks so much!

Edit 10/12/24: we purchased a TR7 washer from our local owned appliance store. First thing we washed was our 10 year old king size white down alternative comforter. It came out sparkling white a fluffy! We couldn’t believe what a change it was from our other washer. Towels are fluffier and smell cleaner also! Thanks everyone for your comments and input 😊

r/appliancerepair on Reddit: Are speed queen washers and dryers that good?
January 29, 2023 -

They come with pretty good reviews and seem pretty durable. I know they make commercial units but I’m kind of curious if they are serviceable. I have a whirlpool stack washer and dryer now that the spin bearings are bad on that is only a year old. The repair place told me I need a whole drum and it would be $475 with shipping. If this was 3-5 years in between changes it may not be that bad, but I don’t think I want to put $475 in it every year plus whatever else breaks. So with durability and the ability to be repaired being the most important factors, is Speed Queen good?

Yes. SQ’s are quite repairable and parts are readily available. They also have long warranties: 3, 5 or 7 years, depending on the model. If you are using more than 2 Tablespoons (or one pod) of detergent per load of laundry, you might be the one destroying your washers bearings. Detergent is super concentrated and enzyme based. If there isn’t enough dirt for the enzymes to react with, then they start eating at seals and other parts. You can literally total your washer by using to much soap. The questions I’d have if you were in my showroom are: Will they be sitting on a concrete foundation on the ground floor? If not, you need to know how to reinforce the floor, or you will have problems. Do you or anyone in your household work a dirty job like construction, mechanics, oilfield etc? Does anyone play a sport where they will have ground in grass or dirt on the uniforms? If yes, your best model is a TC5 (or a TV2 if you want 0 electronics anywhere in the machine, but it comes with a 3 year PARTS warranty, not parts + labor). If not, then you might like the TR (3, 5, or 7) models, which are much gentler on laundry, but less effective on heavy soil and ground in dirt. Do you have pets and would you like a dryer that can remove pet hair? If so, the DR7 dryer has that feature. (You don’t have to buy the matching TR7 washer if you prefer a different model.)
