December 20, 2023I scored this danish teak coffee table from value village and would like some advice on removal of dark burn mark/stain
I do a lot of Danish teak pieces. This is a pretty easy one, but you’ve got to be careful not to hurt the veneer. You need a really good chemical stripper. Stripwell, Kleanstrip, circa 1850. Don’t use Citristrip. Paint it on, leave 15 minutes, carefully use a scraper. If you think there is still finish remaining, strip again. Then use a scotch pad, or 0000 steel wool with mineral spirits to lightly scrub off the stripper residue. Let dry. Lightly hand sand with 150 grit sandpaper wrapped around a block, or square of styrofoam. You may find that the ring stain is gone. If not you’ll need some oxalic acid. In a pinch, Barkeeper’s Friend powder will do. Dissolve 2 tablespoons in a cup of warm water, stir well. Apply to the entire top of the table. If there’s any liquid pooled on the table, soak that up with a shop towel — you don’t want the veneer bubbling up. Let dry. Use a wet sponge or towel to wipe off any residue so it won’t later affect your finish. Let dry. Light sand 150, then 220 grit with sanding block. Clean off dust with towel and mineral spirits. Finish with spray lacquer, or good quality wipe-on poly. If you’re going to go for an oil finish, put it on very thin, wait a couple of hours and buff it all off. Repeat every day for the rest of the week. It has to be buffed off or it won’t cure properly. More on reddit.com

It's a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. If you don't have experience fixing finishes, your attempts are likely to take a small mark and send it very sour, very quickly.
Fixing this is a combination of the right materials and practiced techniques.
I can write out the details of both, but writing long essays is time consuming. Reddit isn't really the place for this. Go to youtube and look up "Behlin touch up". You'll see since interesting uploads from the Behlin finish company. Behlin is no longer made. It's been totally subsumed by their sister company Mohawk.
