As maligned as this movie is, I've always enjoyed it. It has a weight to it that modern dino/kaiju movies just don't have any longer. The blend between the insanely good practical effects and the groundbreaking digital effects was flawless. These characters actually made SMART decisions, given the predicament they were in. No overly heroic self sacrifice, just real people making real decisions.
Sure, the Spielberg geography comes in to play(A LOT) and the smarmy business man was as 90s trope as it gets, but take all of that out and you have a fun ass romp with some great looking dinosaurs. This also has the distinction of being my introduction to the amazing Pete Postlethwaite. I was thirteen when this hit theaters, so give me some credit for not seeing Alien3 or Usual Suspects first.
All in all, this is a hell of a lot of fun and I miss when movies were made like this.
