May 4, 2001 - The success of "The Mummy" in 1999 surprised everyone, and on the day that it opened, Universal Studios greenlit another sequel. The original (the 1999 one) was a lot of fun because it mixed creepy scares with awesome action and goofy humor. The sequel does more or less the same thing, except that the action sequences come pretty much one after another from beginning to end.

Hell yeah. Love both the Mummy and Mummy Returns. Loved Brendan Fraser in those movies and I had such a girl crush on Rachel Weisz.
They are both hilarious and action packed and I have watched both multiple times.
Tried watching the Scorpion King but found it pretty meh. Love the Rock but that wasn’t his best movie. As for the new Mummy with Tom Cruise? Terrible. I’m sorry, for me personally, it’s not a Mummy movie without Brendan Fraser and Co.

It had always been my belief that Nefertiri was there on a daily basis, removing the bracelet in the morning and then putting it back at night, leaving the guards there for extra protection, at least until her untimely death. The guards could have volunteered to keep guarding it, and when they died, they could have left instructions to be left in the room to continue their service to Nefertiri. More on reddit.com

The special effects of "The Mummy Returns" are dated but the fight scenes are well staged and very exciting. One of the movie's great strengths is the art direction. I'll be the first to admit that this is a bloated, CGI heavy, far fetched flick that doesn't live up to the heights of the original '99 movie ... but damn is it still a fantastic fun adventure that pushes Entertainment value to the max!
I feel most people simply remember TMR for its wonky PS2 Scorpion King CGi (which is a fair criticism btw) but it's got so much more going for it than I think it gets credit for. Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz's chemistry is fantastic and they are the perfect leads for such a lively fantasy adventure. The film still retains the same charm of the original and has a fair few standout moments: The Bus Chase, Water Bending, the creepy Forest monkeys & I think the finale in the pyramid is pure fun filled madness.
Let's be real, this movie was never going to garner critical acclaim or win a tonne of accolades, but I don't think it deserves to be remembered purely as a dud (or even forgotten altogether). If I watch The Mummy, I pretty much always watch the Mummy Returns so I guess that's good enough proof that it's a competent & rewatchable sequel. I would even go as far as to say it's legitimately a good movie!
