We are going to be ripping out the rug in this room to replace with hardwood and I need the softest, squishiest rug $200 can buy. I want it to take up most of the room so 8x10 or similar size.

I don’t understand much about rugs and pile and all those details, but I do need it to be easy enough to clean well. We do have a good carpet shampooer.

I got a shag rug for my dorm room, thinking it would be nice and fluffy and comfy but I ended up hating it, it was impossible to clean and not very dense so you could feel the yucky binding of the rug or whatever the bottom is.

Does anyone have any advice please?

Put a pad underneath any rug you purchase and it'll become much more plush. Makes a big difference, keeps the rug from sliding, it makes cheap $200 rugs feel much nicer.

IKEA has some rugs that size for that price.

Costco has some super soft rugs for cheaper than usual, but I’m not sure an 8x10 is going to be under $200. If it’s under $200 it’s probably not going to feel squishy. However, I wonder if you could get some type of foam pad for under it if you find a cheaper rug that’s not as squishy.

A flat weave would be easiest to clean and least squishy. A Persian style rug would be a bit thicker and it feels the best under bare feet. I personally wouldn't go any fluffier on a rug that I plan to clean myself. It will be hard to find anything big under $200. Try under $500 and you will have more options. If you want it to be a thing you hand down to the next generation, hand knotted, unique, and incorporate silk or more expensive threads, it will run you at least 2k. Maybe more now post pandemic. Disclaimer: I am Persian and biased. Lol
