In short: We can turn it off, but there are two problems: We can't go to permanent DST because it's not allowed by Federal law (yet). The legislature has to vote 2/3 on either permanently keeping PDT or PST, but while there is broad support for not changing the clocks anymore, that support is split roughly 50/50 on which option is better, so they can't get to 2/3 supporting either option. Please don't do that with REI it's super shady and causes companies to revamp their return policy which hurts their loyal customers and possibly yourself in the future if you end up shopping there. Think costco electronics policy and what happened.
Take a look at yard/garage sales on Craigslist and score a cheap tent. Sleeping bags can be had on Amazon for less than 35 for a decent entry level coleman or similar. If you have an air mattress I would use that or you can bring multiple heavy blankets to sleep on.
For food I'd bring a kettle, ramen, peanut butter and jelly, hot dogs (if you have a cooler), coffee and or tea. The most important thing is to get outside and enjoy yourself.
