I don't know if I'm allowed to ask this, but when I was in the store the other day the gentleman had a chart that showed the value of the phones when tmobile purchases them back from the customer. Does anyone have that? And if so can I see it? Thanks in advance.

r/tmobile on Reddit: Is T-Mobile’s Trade-In Value Better Than Apple’s?
26 June 2025 -

Hey, everyone!

So, my iPhone 14 Pro Max screen just completely died on me out of nowhere (Apple couldn’t figure out why). I was originally thinking of grabbing the 16e and then trading it in for the iPhone 17 lineup, but the Apple Store employee convinced me to pay $400 to replace the screen. The reason: he said I could probably trade it in for $500+ later, and that T-Mobile often gives better trade-in values than Apple.

Now, here’s my question:
I’ve never traded a phone in through my carrier before because I always thought it needed to be tied to a new plan (and I’m grandfathered into my current one). Is that not the case anymore? Does T-Mobile really offer better trade-in deals just because?

r/tmobile on Reddit: Reduced Trade in Value
5 October 2023 -

Hello All,

I recently switched to t mobile go5g next and took traded in my current phone to receive a free 15 pro. I just recieved a notification that my t mobile had recieved my device (iPhone 12) and my trade in value was only 110 dollars.

It's been longer than 14 days since I got my new phone, so do I have any options here?

I have another device eligible for trade in if that's an option.

r/tmobile on Reddit: Doing the math: T-Mobile trade vs Apple Store trade
5 October 2024 -

I wanted to determine whether it was better to stay on Magenta Max and buy the phone outright through Apple or move to Go5G Plus to get the better trade values so I did some basic calculations.

Currently, we pay $112/mo for two lines on Magenta Max with an Insider discount. Both phones are paid off, so this is only the cost of the plan. Only one person needs a new phone, so let's assume we are talking about only a single line here. Assuming we move to Go5G Plus, that will cost an extra $10 per month, or $240 over the period of 24 months. With an iPhone 13 trade-in, an iPhone 16 Pro 256GB will cost $11.50-$12 per month. But there's also a $35 connection fee and sales tax.

TOTAL FOR T-MOBILE OPTION: $645 over the period of two years (24mo). This includes tax, connection fee, monthly phone payment, and the increased cost of moving to Go5G Plus.

If you trade through the Apple Store, they give $250 for an iPhone 13. The total cost with tax for the 16 Pro is $1191.

TOTAL FOR APPLE STORE TRADE OPTION: $941. Just the cost of the new phone, tax, minus the trade value.

So as you can see, it saves you about $300 by going through T-Mobile, but let's say you keep the iPhone 16 Pro a 3rd year, then you save only about $200. Now what if you buy the iPhone directly from Apple and rather than doing the trade, you sell it on Facebook or Swappa? I see the iPhone 13 listed for about $350 on Swappa.

r/tmobile on Reddit: T-Mobile 'Yearly Upgrade' Benefit Calculator
20 September 2024 -

Hi all,

I wanted to see how expensive it would be over time to use the Yearly Upgrade feature. I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and was debating between getting the iPhone 16 Pro Max, or waiting for the iPhone 17 Slim (or Flip or Fold or whatever it ends up being called).

So I created this spreadsheet based on my understanding of the policy and I was hoping that someone would be willing to check my math. Based on these calculations, over 12 years and adjusting for a remaining balance, it will cost me around $3,200 to upgrade every year, versus $1,200 if I were to upgrade every 4 years. The $2,000 difference would only be a cost of $167 split across the 12 years, which doesn't seem like a lot extra to upgrade every year versus every 4 years.

This obviously has some flaws as it assumes a promo every year, trading in a good condition phone, and doesn't account for price increases, but it sure seems like it should cost more to upgrade 12 times vs 3 times? There is probably some flaw here that I'm not seeing.

Anyway, feel free to download your own copy and mess around with it.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MaEFRFYdu_aH7Euo4fsZ6l6dVwqBjbSAwj8e4-8FV4I/edit?usp=sharing

EDIT: I updated the sheet to include a spot for taxes, since it was pointed out that you pay taxes up front, and that will increase the cost to upgrade every year.

You're sorta right. Let me give you an example. This year if you want the pro max you'll pay $200 plus tax on the whole phone. Let's round up to $300. Since trade in is $1000, phone is $1200 You pay the tax upfront, so you're out $100 Over the next year, you'll pay half the $200, so $100 in paying 12 EIPs by the time you upgrade again. So $200 a year going forward, assuming, no change in the price of the iPhone, trade in, etc. So 12 years, $2400 but you got a new phone every year. But of course prices will go up, etc

TLDR: My modeling and actuals show that with my plan/situation, upgrading to newest Pro device every two years and selling my unlocked Pro device (I trade in an old Samsung each time) is the lowest TCO for mobile service/phone and keeps me from going to leaving TMO to an MVNO or another postpaid carrier. YMMV I've been with TMO for about a decade and recently, I went round and round and round on my thinking with trying to decide if I was spending more many than I needed to vs MVNO. Summary of my plan: 4 lines for $160 (2 adults / 2 teens). All 4 lines all have a 'kickback'. Basically use <2GB data and get a $10 bill credit. Most months our base plan is $120 as we're always connected to wifi. Additionally, 3 of the lines have the "yearly upgrade" (formerly forever upgrade) and the "Netflix on us". After spending way too much time on my XLSX it turns out that my model shows (all based on iPhone Pro 128GB devices) I need to hold on to my phones for 5-6 years with an MVNO that offers unlimited data compared to base $160 we pay now to break even. Toss in the kickback (happens about 80% of the time) and that extends out well beyond 5-6 years. The hack I always use to maximize my ROI/TCO is to buy a refurbished phone (ie for this most recent time a Samsung S9 at $100) and use that as the trade to get the $1K of credits. I then take my unlocked 2 year old iPhone Pro model that has a battery capacity of high 80s to low 90s and sell it on Swappa (sometimes a family member will buy it) where I generally pocket around $450 after fees. Toss in the $75 Sams Club credit and cost of case and taxes I'm netting about $500 when I upgrade. There's no doubt that the mobile service cost of MVNO is less vs TMO, but with the Pro phones being $1K and the trade in benefits that the yearly upgrade (ie get same deal as highest priced mobile service plan) allows - upgrading to the new Pro line every other year is best for our pocketbook. As a bonus, come January '25 one line, the one that doesn't have the yearly upgrade, will be free (jumped on a BYOD promo about a year ago). This will squeeze our annual TCO down even more. Might all the ROI/TCO numbers change if we didn't to the Pro lineage. Sure, but I'll never regret owning one of the best cell phone cameras with me at all times - which is what I value the most about these darn things. Feel free to AMA.

New T-Mobile policy could give you less money up front for your trade-in
29 August 2024 - Previously, to borrow an example from The Mobile Report, T-Mobile’s trade-in promos made it so if you traded in an iPhone 13 with a value of $200, but T-Mobile’s promo credit made it worth $800 when buying an iPhone 15, the $200 from the phone’s value would be applied up front, while the remaining $600 would be spread across the installment.
