October 24, 2018Does anyone else want to start a "how to draw syntax trees thread?"
Sorry folks haven't been able to help too much. The fact that syntax trees are hard to draw is inherent in what they are. It gets difficult because you're trying to create visual conventions to depict the underlying structure (the linguistic conventions) of the sentence. Seems bizarre, right? Creating a simplified system of conventions to describe the very conventions of language. Well, it would be truly bizarre if we tried to achieve the same structure of the language being represented. Nevertheless, we don't know them. Not all of them and their details, at least. As such, syntax tree conventions are not so much proper representations, but proposals of how the morphemes in a sentence are interacting. We gauge the value of these proposals by checking to see if what the syntax tree represents what we feel the sentence or phrase represents. I find intuition in linguistics to be an essential part. I find it all so hard in the field of linguistics because lingusitics is an attempt at empirical description of the very system that is attempting the description. More on reddit.com

I am using Max Morenbergs Doing Grammar and we are going over sentence structures. I can identify and label all the components of the sentence, but I can explain the sentence any deeper.
Things like MV:Past, PrepPh: Adv-time, NP:Obj/Prep, MV:Press, NP:DObj, objComp, PrepPh:Adv-pl, PrepP: Adv-reception.
I would really love some help if anyone has some time to PM with me, but if not some advice on readings to better understand these concepts.

The easiest answer is you do it in Visio, but that's not going to help you if you don't have a license. It'll be fiddly, but easiest way will be: Open new Word doc, go to the Insert Tab Select the Shapes option and select whatever shape you need, and modify fill to 'no fill' and border colour and width to whatever you want. Select the shape, copy it, then paste and shift the oval to the right spot. Keep doing this until you've got everything where you need. This gets you the exact same size and colour shapes as your first one. Repeat these steps with the Arrow shape. Repeat again with a Text Box Fill in all your text boxes, adjust layout and spacing as needed, and you're done.
