I have been using an HDMI cable + HDMI to USB-C adapter to connect two monitors to my laptop. My main monitor is directly plugged in to the HDMI-socket, and the USB-C adapter to the only USB-C socket on the laptop. It's been working flawlessly until yesterday. Now the second monitor just displays "No HDMI signal" and goes to sleep mode. It does not even recognize me plugging in the USB-C cable. Take note that I've done zero (0, nil, no) changes to my setup.
Naturally I thought that the adapter was faulty since I did some testing with the USB-C socket (it charged my iPhone), and the HDMI-cable was working. Purchased a new HDMI to USB-C cable but to no avail.
On my laptop the device manager shows my monitor as a "BillBoard Service".
Has anyone run into this problem? Google is not my friend in this matter, even though I am a man of lurking the internet. Can someone point me in the right direction here?
Many thanks.
Edit: Okay so it got solved by turing the laptop off, then holding the on button for 30 seconds and letting go. What this triggered I have no idea but it might help someone out.
I need some help.
I have two USB-C ports that are USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports. I am trying to run a second monitor through one of these by using an HDMI to USB-C adapter, but it is not being recognized by my PC. Windows keeps giving me a message stating " Display connection might be limited".
I have tested the monitor, cable, and adapter with my work laptop and it worked just fine.
Could someone help me figure out what is going on?
What reason do you have to believe your "3.2 gen 2" ports support DisplayPort Alternate Mode?
The "3.2 gen 2" is completely irrelevant. DP altmode support is an orthogonal feature, and it is entirely possible (if unusual setting aside the current generation iPhones) to have DP altmode support on a port that doesn't even support USB 3.
Note that it is unusual for USB C ports on non laptop PCs to support DP altmode, with the exception of ones on video cards. It is becoming a little more common recently but it is still pretty unusual.
Check the manual for your PC/Laptop and see if any port has video (DP alt mode). USB 3.2 does not require video, on some laptops they do implement it but only on some ports. If you have a desktop with USB C chances are even smaller, again check the manual. If you have a PC with AMD latest gens CPU it might have one as AMD has an iGPU on most processors but it is a very basic one, only for office apps. It will be unusable for gaming for example. Also the MB should implement it a high end MB will route the signal but a cheap MB probably will not. But on a desktop you should have 1-2 HDMI outputs already so you do not need any adapter.

Update: I was able to get HDMI CEC working with a Pulse Eight CEC HDMI adapter.
I wanted HDMI CEC for my Windows 10 computer that is connected to the TV in the living room so that I can control Kodi using the TV remote.
I found that USB-C to HDMI adapters can have CEC support so I purchased one that does.
There is a single USB-C port on the computer so I pulled the HDMI cable out of the HDMI port (which was all working fine), plugged the USB-C to HDMI adapter into the USB-C port and the HDMI cable into the adapter. The TV didn't get an image.
On my main computer I used remote control software (AnyDesk) to see what was happening, as shown in this screenshot, it claims the device is malfunctioning. I checked online and it seems maybe some USB-C ports are not capable of video output.
Where do I go from here? Can I get a USB-USB-C adapter that supports video? Or a PCI-e expansion card that has USB-C ports that support video?
Not all USB-C ports support video output. You should check the specifications on your particular model.
Only USB-C port with USB 3.1 or above version can stream video.
Hi Lucy. I'm Greg here to help.
I see a lot of reported issues with USB-C to HDMI adapters, in fact any adapters for monitors in Windows are very likely not to work for many reasons because the native method is always much, much better.
But you can troubleshoot USB-C to HDMI monitor connections not working to see if one of these fixes work - I've collected them all:

Feel free to ask back any questions. If you'll post back detailed results then I may know what to suggest next, if necessary.

I have a hp envy HP ENVY Laptop 13-ba1xxx Product number: 50U00UA#ABA Windows 11 with Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics. It has a USB-C thunderbolt port. My hdmi to usb-c adapter is not working, and though the monitor recognizes it, there is no display transmitted. This is the adapter I used.

Strangely it worked and then post an update while it was plugged in it just stopped working.
When I use a colleague's Belkin adapter, a notification pops up saying display connection might be limited, but is effectively the same problem.
I have updated drivers in Device Manager, to no avail.
I have a Lenovo yoga 920 with no HDMI port. I bought a generic usb type-c to HDMI adapter, but it is not working. The USB hub part of it is working, but it will not display via HDMI. Any help would be greatly appreciated ๐
There are reports of usb-c to hdmi dongles stopping working after update from windows 10 to windows 11. The monitor is recognized by the system, shows up as PnP Monitor, but the system does not provide an HDMI signal to the monitor.
The provided solutions don't solve the issue as they refer to updating the graphics driver. For my case this was hp spectre x360 with uhd 620.
The solution to this unsolved problem is to update the firmware of USB-C port from the hp support site, with the latest firmware which was updated december 2021. This will solve the issue on windows 11.

So I purchased a USB-C to HDMI hub, so I could connect my monitor to my laptop cuz im getting another monitor. Its a 4k@30hz HDMI input, and when i connect it it doesn't detect as a display, It's a pretty old monitor so I was questioning if that;s the issue, its a HP w2207h. My laptop's usb-c port is a usb c 3.2 so it does support video output. the thing is, my monitor does display when I connect it directly to my laptop through it's already built in HDMI port but doesn't work when I connect it through the hub, I tried 2 hubs and the samething happened. I did multiple things like restarting my device, updating drivers but none of them worked, does anyone have any idea on how to fix this? My laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 and I run it on Windows 10
Firstly I would like to say that I am 100% not at all tech savvy but would really like to know why my Lenovo laptop isnโt accepting my usb c to HDMI adapter when it works or my husbands apple laptop? If anyone has any working solutions I would be more than happy to make a small donation of ยฃ10 as I really need to fix this ASAP. Thanks
USB-C to HDMI can be done in one of two ways: either the cable is passive and the computer implements the HDMI alternate mode, or the cable is active (and is actually displayport to HDMI) and the computer implements the displayport alternate mode.
I am assuming the cable is the passive type, and your laptop doesn't support the alternate mode. What model of Lenovo is it? What model of cable?
Some USB-C ports are not able to do video at all, but I expect Lenovo to implement at least Displayport alternate mode. HDMI alternate mode is a little more rare though, they could have left it out. I see Lenovo sell a USB-C to HDMI cable that is the active type. You can probably buy a cable like this one and have it work.
Your laptop might not support USB C Alt Mode
Hi all,
I used to use a laptop connected to 3 monitors. In order to get enough I/O I used an adapter. It worked without issues for a few years. I now use my laptop as a laptop again, replacing it with a newly built PC. I don't yet have a GPU for my PC so I'm using the onboard graphics on the 9800x3d, which performs competently. My motherboard only has an HDMI out and Displayport out. So, I'm trying to use the same adapter I used to use on my Windows 10 laptop on my new Windows 11 PC to output to my third monitor.
My motherboard doesn't have a USB C port on the rear I/O, but the front panel of the PC does and is properly connected to the motherboard. When I plug in my adapter (with the monitor connected) I get a notification stating that the display connection might be limited and to make sure the displayport device is supported by my PC. For clarity, this is an HDMI adapter using HDMI to connect to the monitor. Same setup that worked on my laptop.
I'm on Windows 11, my motherboard is the PRIME B650M-A AX II, I'm running the latest BIOS. My front I/O is the Lian Li A3 MATX, processor is the 9800x3d, the adapter is generic, I believe it is this one https://www.amazon.ca/Selore-S-Global-Converter-LenovoYoga-Thinkpad/dp/B07QKVY23Q?crid=OJBJ4O106E0L&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.fNxTQUQrS8wnwkz_h-4TLA6jQIjwnvgM_Xqn8a9TJN0wvkJR44h2WZMnC0DVf30gGFLLxkI4vi717rv73NimUGPhD5OLGDsui-rY_7aMv-kvLkDGGox8YyTcPK8O_ekSl6h8XPYoLU70xF39XrFVvSy2W9kYLq28xl-6U6Fw629SHDjKcvq7LBjEGsMHg9k8AyS1cBQOArqCT2N0VJBURnR_8PYWkULDr9qYw3HZy7vUaMFBp4mWocmdE5F_GoSgAnIBRlFR2HUmqfDvIwPtqXMk3ZAvyaj9w6dmxHxtzp7UXpCHI85NxC3sMCT16R5-dm2R3-yOGOOFPEiUbbBxQzTwVB7Pj9zdqix8nyT4qgTp-SOpklHMfnFrkfvWHqCMJwEPctxKiL1TysvffV_prrV9arJir9xcpvka7XTKGdHK3Tbo7gNMSj_Cucel2V7Q.9lteeCp2Xk0h7GusnCKZf9Tv5BAGOsIxZlvpDUCfV3o&dib_tag=se&keywords=selore%26s-global%2Busb%2Bc%2Bto%2Bdual%2Bhdmi%2Badapter%2B4k&qid=1740162978&sprefix=usb%2Bc%2Bto%2Bhdmi%2Bselor%2Caps%2C103&sr=8-5&th=1
Any help would be much appreciated, maybe there is a USB BIOS setting that needs to be changed or some other setting? I'm posting here because I'm not really sure how to troubleshoot any further and figure out if it could be software issues or hardware incompatibility.
I would bet money those "front USB-C ports" do not support video out. They are almost certainly USB-C (data) only.
Making changes to your system BIOS settings or disk setup can cause you to lose data. Always test your data backups before making changes to your PC.
