Please reply with the following details to assist you further with the issue:

When you say, “the virtual drivers that Windows has now do not work” what happens when you connect a device to the Port?
Are you able to locate the COM Port drivers in Device Manager?
What is the make and model of the computer?

You can try to manually add the legacy hardware for COM port and see if that helps. Please follow the steps mentioned below:

Press Windows key + X, and click on Device Manager.
Click on Action, select Add legacy hardware and click on Next.
Click on Install the hardware that I manually select and click on Next.
Scroll down, select Ports (COM & LTP) and click on Next.
Select the appropriate drivers and click on Next.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

USB to serial adapter driver

Look in Device Mangler in the device properties and get the hardware ID. Then Google that, and it should point you at the adapter or chipset mfgr's website, to download the driver. For future though, just buy one based on an FTDI chip and it'll plug and play in Windows. Other common chips will too, but FTDI seems to be the most reliable in operation. More on reddit.com
