After about 5 years of faithful service my sealbar on my VP-112 (original) stopped sealing. Wasn't even any residual heat to the touch. I figured no problem, I'll order some replacements from Webstuarant store. NOPE. Replacements not working either. Call up Ary Vacmaster support, they tell me to check the contacts, they're on nice and tight. Make sure they're clean, that's not the issue. So it's a deeper problem. They give me some phone numbers for some techs that don't service my area (NYC) so I'm SOL. They couldn't provide a schematic of the device either so I'm flying blind...

Anyone got any leads on someone that could diagnose/service this thing for me or has experience with this issue?

Any help appreciated. Barring that, what's a similarly sized/capable chamber vac that's popular now that Vacmaster has vacated the sub $1,000 market?

UPDATE: Ary VacMaster sent me a replacement main board. Ran about $40 with shipping. It was an adventure getting it installed but by no means complicated. The worst part is getting the glue they used to keep some of the connectors in place during shipping off the original board. I recommend having a buddy help you with the install so they can keep the stainless still tank elevated while you work on switching out the board, thus not needing to disconnect anything from the tank. With new board installed all is well again. Had nothing to do with the contacts. If you're in the same boat and the internet guided you to this post I recommend the board replacement, it could save your machine. The support at VacMaster said the main board is the most common thing that dies on the 112 and 112s. For us, it was the port on the side that you can use jars and special canisters that suck the air out of the jar to seal.

I know it's old, but this pops up near the top of Google, and it hasn't been answered in full, so I thought I'd elaborate. So there's 2 vacuum "chambers" in this unit. One is for the food, and the other is for the sealing mechanism, which requires an internal sealing "chamber" to move the pistons that drive the sealing bar. When I need to seal without a vacuum, I turn it on with the lid still up and let it go for 20 seconds, drop the lid, and press the seal button. The sealing vacuum "chamber" is separate from the food vacuum chamber, so it will still seal even without a vacuum in the food chamber. Source: My sealing vacuum "chamber" failed, and I called VacMaster, who helped me identify the problem and sent me parts to repair it (I was happy to do it myself as it was easy). In my case, it would draw the vacuum for the food chamber, but the seal bar wouldn't move during the sealing stage. I had bad gaskets that needed to be swapped out. But the reason it can't seal without pulling any vacuum at all is that this secondary sealing stage "chamber" needs a vacuum in order to move the sealing bar into position. I assume it was done seperate like this so that the force and speed of the sealing bar would be the same independently of the food chamber vacuum and time selected.

No. It needs some vacuum in order to vacuum seal properly. You can just vacuum for 5-10 seconds and then seal.

I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit, but it seems like you folks might have the most knowledge about this.

I recently purchased a VP112s, and it doesn't seem to work at all. According to the website, foodsaver bags should work with the chamber sealer, but I'm having trouble getting anything to seal. I've set it to the max vacuum and seal time without any success.

I'm not sure if the issue is with the machine, or perhaps I'm missing a step. Is the black seal pad suppose to touch the seal bar? Looking through the side, the black sealing pad doesn't seem to be touching the seal bar at all. Based on the pictures, it doesn't seem like the seal bar is that thick.

The seal bar only comes into contact with the upper seal edge if a vacuum is achieved - so if the lid isn’t locked in your bag won’t seal without vacuum. Are you sure you are evacuating the chamber? Are the inside surfaces of the bag wet where you ant it to seal?

After a few seconds of running, it should be really hard to open the lid - the vacuum should be holding it in place. When you close it, make sure it’s seated well. At the end of the run, the pump will stop, the sealing counter will count down, then you should hear the air rushing back in as the vacuum is released, and the beeper will go off. If you don’t hear the air rush in, the lid is not sealing properly. I have found that the lid sometimes doesn’t sit properly, so make sure you jiggle it. You should see the bag start to bulge as the vacuum draws air out of the bagged material. I take it you don’t get any boiling, with water spilling into the chamber from the bag? Boiling temperature decreases with pressure (ideal gas law) so room temp water will boil at near-complete vacuum and come out of the bag, ruining your seal.

It sounds normal through the vacuum cycle but at the end instead of sealing the bag and then releasing the vacuum it does nothing. Vacmaster doesn't support it any longer. Any ideas how to get it to seal again or is it a giant paperweight?

This model had a number of design flaws - bad sealing, cracks in the plastic chamber bed, pump failures. I would call customer support back and press them until they replace it with an updated model.

Had this same issue on this same exact model. They never responded to any inquiry. Let me know if you have any luck. But since then, I've turned people away from vacmaster. Currently have a LEM chamber sealer from Costco and I've been very happy with it.
