Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is no longer officially supported on Windows 7, as Microsoft ended support with version 1.70.3 (July 2022). However, you can still use older versions on Windows 7 by downloading the zip archive instead of the installer.
Latest officially compatible version: 1.70.3 – Available at https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_70. This is the last version with official installer support for Windows 7.
Extended compatibility (up to version 1.81.1): You can run VS Code 1.81.1 on Windows 7 by downloading the zip archive from https://update.code.visualstudio.com/1.81.1/win32-x64-archive/stable, extracting it, and running
Code.exe. This version works without the installer but may have compatibility issues with newer extensions.
For newer versions beyond 1.81.1, Microsoft’s official releases no longer work due to outdated Chromium dependencies. Alternative options include:
VSCodium – A community-driven, open-source version of VS Code with telemetry disabled. It supports Windows 7 and is available at https://vscodium.com.
