Anyone ever had a job as a stocker at Walmart?
I was an overnight grocery support manager about ten years ago. My crew's typical night started at ten, we'd have a ten minute meeting at the start of the shift, discussing our load and who was going to throw freight on what aisles. If the truck had arrived early, or on time,we'd stage our product, start throwing and go to break. On a typical night, the lighter aisles would be stocked by lunch. The finished associates would help the other aisles get stocked and faced by third break. We'd work our back stock between third break and the end of shift. If the truck was late, we'd throw back stock first. There was to be no pallets on the sales floor by six AM. Grocery associates did their stuff, dairy would do theirs, and so on. There was rarely any cross between these sections. At my store, grocery and GM were pretty independent, and wouldn't swap associates. The shift ended for my crew at 7AM. All aisles were responsible for facing their aisles, rotating their stock, stocking and of the end caps if their product was featured, and disposing of their trash. If you are the one that filled the cardboard baler, you'd make the bale, though many people left that up to me. As support, I kept everything going, and directed the crew. If the morning receiving team wasn't in yet, I would be responsible for receiving product. If any of the other departments on the grocery side of the store needed anything, they'd come to me. I was also responsible for performance reviews, disciplinary action, training, and so on. There was a small amount of overtime available every week, and since I was the only support during most of my time there, I generally used it on myself, and worked six day weeks. It caused the store to take a hit during it's evaluation, but the overnight assistant managers had approved it. The job was alright, and paid OK. One of my overnight associate managers was a really great guy, the other was lazy and would sleep. Co and higher management at my store was shit. I also had a husband/wife team, that if I did something they didn't like, like splitting them up for the workload, they would complain in the morning. Management took their side, always. There are no forklifts like you are thinking. We had a handful of normal pallet jacks, one electric, some carts (shopping carts and narrow carts to move back stock) and the walkie stacker being the closest thing to a forklift. All of my crew was trained on all of the equipment. Never take the walkie stacker onto the sales floor, management freaks out (but work needs to be done, and things like that happen when GM steals all your pallet jacks). I was happy when I was a stocker, but became unhappy when I took on the support role; I'd give it a 4/10. More on reddit.com

Does Career Preference Matter

It doesn't for me. Neither does approaching managers and talking about my (now former) plans to move up.

Guaranteed, when I finally put in my two weeks' notice, they'll wonder why I'm leaving the company.
