Step by Step details of what a Walmart Cashier does
As a cashier, you can be asked to do pretty much everything... Cleaning, sorting returns, personal shopping, carry out, zoning, running errands, odd jobs, door greeter, etc. Here are some tips and situations: Watch the screen as you scan, to prevent discrepancy on the items you're scanning... If you're unsure if you already scanned the item, try voiding it. For clothes, if the barcode is missing, try looking for the tags inside.... Usually, they have the UPC on them, so you just have to type it in. Learn how to put receipt tape... Always print out an action code slip, just to see if they're printing normally. If you need receipt-reprint due to poor printing, don't do any transaction, and call a csm, coz they can only reprint the previous one, and put the defective receipt inside your till, and leave a note that it's a reprint. Learn how to write a claims slip. Always bring more than one pen for WIC, Checks, Surveys, etc. The other one is extra, or if someone needs it. And maybe, a calculator... I wish I had a calculator with me when the customer seems not convinced about their total, and they kept looking their receipt for mins, and finding faults about it. lmao. Request an extra badge, vest, and the barcode sticker, and put them on your locker, in case you forget to bring yours. Or, if you don't have a locker, just keep them home, in case something is missing. If the hand scanner doesn't work, and they still want you to use that register, get a piece of paper/paper towel/receipt paper and write down the UPCs of big items, and manually enter them. If it says, 'not for sale' tell them the item is probably being re-called, because it might be dangerous. Notify a csm/manager about the item. Alcohol/Tobacco sales - Check IDs for all members of the party, especially if they're group or friends, classmates, siblings/cousin, co-workers, etc. Deny the sale and explain the situation to them, and if they try to sweet talk you, don't be swayed. If they get pissed, call a manager, and usually they'll say the same thing... In case they're gonna make an exception, and you're not comfortable, ask them to use other cashier's number, or their own number. WIC transaction - learn how to do it. Make sure they have the right items, because every eligible WIC items goes through, so it's the cashier's job to make sure they have the right items. If they're insisting that they were allowed to get it the last, they probably allowed it for some reason, so it's not really nice to take advantage of it. Write the date last, in case they want to cancel the transaction. Make sure they have the WIC book, and it matches the WIC check. Also, make sure they're not immediately signed... If they are, get a piece of paper and have them sign, and see for yourself if they're genuine. Don't let them sign all check after just 1 transaction, to prevent confusion, and in case they changed their mind and want to use it some other time. Don't break down bills, or the other way. If they want to break down bill, ask them to buy anything. Also, make sure that the money isn't fake. As much as possible, don't leave the register... Unless, the CSMs takes long, and you really have to grab someone, coz the customers are getting pissed. Just have the nearby cashiers to watch the register for you if you're on an on-going transaction. If there's an item that doesn't have a upc/price/tag, tell them, and ask them if they still want it. If they do, tell them that it might take a while until someone comes. Also, tell them if they can pay for their items first, so you don't have to hold the line. You're F'ed if they refused to pay, and b*tch about it. They'll even say, "It's not my fault." If the price they saw isn't the same, apologize and tell them it might be misplaced, and call a csm... Sometimes, if the price sounds okay, they'll just allow it... But if it's too good to be true, they'll do a price check. Price match - We only price match through Walmart.com, and always call a CSM to see if the item is eligible for price match. Coupons - Watch for fake coupons, if you feel uncomfortable, call ca csm... Especially if they're extreme couponers... Also, if the coupon isn't scanning, check if they have the right item... If they got the wrong item, tell them it's the wrong item... If they seem to have it, call a csm and let them deal with it... Read the verbiages carefully... You can search online the different verbiages you might encounter, and what it means. One example: Limit x coupons per household per day. Meaning, if they're doing separate transactions, they can't do that... If they said they'll just go to another lane, they can't do that... Actually, they can do that and they won't know, but you already know they've done the same thing, so you better notify a csm, and tell them about it. If the receipt is out, and you've scanned extra item, apologize and direct them to customer service... Or, tell them if they just want to get the item to save the hustle. If so, have them come back, and check if they got the same item. If they want to get another item, and asked you to just scan it one more time, I highly recommend not doing it... Just tell them they don't have to fall in line and just go in front, and you'll entertain them after one customer. If someone forgot their money/card, and they said, "I'll come back." Tell them you'll suspend the transaction, and you'll only hold their items for a limited time, and they will immediately be sent back to be sorted out, especially if they have perishable items. If your store do credit card offers/surveys, you better do it everytime, so they can't say anything about you. BoB(Bottom of basket) check pretty much any items that might've been missed, or something underneath, so you can just use the hand scanner. LISA(Look Inside Always) open up everything, zippers, bags, tote boxes, etc. Sometimes, there are unwanted items slipped inside, so you better check everything. You should know how to detect counterfeit money, it would be better if you can get those highlighter thingy for fake money. Don't hit cash when you don't have money in your hand(There's a scam going on everyday, that takes advantage of new cashiers.) When doing cash, make sure you typed it correctly. Had one traumatic experience, where I accidentally added 1 digit due to lag, and worn out keypad, and it affected my speed for a week. If that happens to you, give them the exact change, and you'll be fine... But just in case, call a csm so they can attest, and leave a not so you can be rest assured. You can only key in Discount card/EBT card if they're somewhat not scanning, and you have it on your hand. buying/exchanging propane - Click 'QUICK KEYS' then choose whatever they want, and direct them to where your propanes are at. Gift receipt - Click 'Gift receipt' and scan the item. If they want multiple items, you have to do it one by one. Quantity key - feel free when to use it, if they have like bunch of baby foods which aren't a like, I just do it one by one... It takes longer if I try to sort it out. Learn how to remove locks like the one for bikes, CD/DVDs, Alcohol, expensive clothes, spider locks, etc. If you need change hit the action code for it, and order what you need... I rarely use this, it's much faster when I ask a csm directly. There might be more that I might've missed, I might add it later, or someone might do it. Cashier job description
When all of us attended orientation, we all signed a piece of paper (or the electronic equivalent) that says Walmart has the right to assign additional duties as needed. If your store needs someone to gather carts, they can pull you off a register. They can pull a stocker from the aisles, they can pull an OGP person from their pick run. I have seen TLs and Coaches go outside for carts because nobody else was available. I've even seen my Store Manager bring carts in when we couldn't spare anyone else. So yes, your brother can be sent outside for carts. If he doesn't want to do it, he can give his vest and name badge to any available manager. More on reddit.com

Walmart Cashier/Customer Service Desk
In service desk it is basically a lot of processing returns. Most people are good about the process, however there are always people who try to ruin things for everyone else. You have to watch for receipt shoppers or people who try return the wrong item in the box and then play dumb when you catch them. Then the people who know they are caught and will scream and make a scene to try to get their way. It can be fun once you learn to deal with the difficult ones. Questions About Cashier Duties!
A cashier zone areas around their registers or they can be pulled to so varies duties. At walmart, there is no such thing as "that's not my job" because part of everyone's job duties actually has that they can be utilized in other areas or pulled to different departments. So, with that being said, your friend should try to get with their coach or people lead and let them know what they ca ad can't do. Most likely, they will have to get another accommodation that is more specific to their needs. If the accommodation is only for sitting at the register, then technically, they can have this associate doing things such as zoning and even stocking and even getting carts outside. So I got my brother a job at walmart with me as a cashier. We are very short on cart pushers and they are constantly putting him on carts even though that is not the job he signed up for. He still does it, but we are in a nor’easter storm right now and they still had him out there for over half his shift. AFTER he already changed into clean dry clothes they asked him to go out again and he told them that he really would rather not and that it’s not in his job description to do so.
