Be wary of washable rugs. They are often paper thin and cheaply made. Generally, most people don’t own a washing machine big enough to even fit their washable area rug. Depending on what size you want, actually washing your washable rug may not be feasible. Answer from Stunning-Librarian90 on reddit.com

I’ve newly discovered the world of washable rugs only to not find any with good recommendations? I’m not looking for anything fancy, just something that can be thrown in the washing machine and won’t get sucked up by my vacuum. I’d be getting a 5x7 or even 5x6 if I can find it. I’ve seen Ruggable and Tumble Rugs but seem to only be seeing the bad reviews. I see that Amazon has some but again, more bad reviews than good. So I’m hopeful that Reddit can help me narrow down at least where I should buy one.

I feel like every few years my area rugs are so matted and look super run down. I've had them professionally cleaned and they still don't look great. I also had an old cat for years who had lots of accidents which didn't help.

I've looked into ruggable but saw mixed results. Anyone super happy with their area rugs that lasts more than 2-3 years? What brand do you have? Ideally looking for something easy to clean or I can put in the washing machine.

I swore I’d never buy another “cute but doomed” rug after the last one met its end via a juice box ambush. But here we are again. I need something that won’t make me cry when my kid decides applesauce is finger paint or when the dog does, well, dog things.

So, washable rugs, are they worth it? What brands are you actually liking right now? I keep hearing about Ruggable but I feel like there have to be other options out there. It also needs to be able to fit in my washing machine, or I'm hoping, but it's for a smallish area (5 x 7).

I have a large rug in my family room that I am very close to ditching out of disgust between my toddler getting sick all over it and my cat dragging his dingleberry butt across it both within the space of a week. I cleaned it of course with a carpet/upholstery spot cleaner but idk. Both those things are pretty gross. I'd leave the floor bare but it's a large room and the coldest in the house and could use something. I see these washable rugs everywhere that don't require the pads like the brand name ones do, but it seems like it would be difficult to actually wash these in practice especially larger sizes (8x10 or 9x12 ft). I have a large top loader with a removable agitator that can handle large comforters (full/queen) and king size quilts. But I'd be worried about it handling something that would be potentially quite heavy when wet. Anyone have any experience with these rugs and actually washing them?

EDIT: I really appreciate the comments so far - some good recommendations and food for thought. I might end up getting two smaller washable ones (5x7's maybe) plus or minus a wet/dry vac, we'll see!

December 17, 2023 -

I’m interested in buying a large area rug and a couple of runners. However, I have 2 dogs and 2 small children. We live in an area where the dirt is easily tracked inside.

The sound of a washable rug is great; but I keep thinking 1) it’s gonna be so thin, what’s the point? 2) my vacuum is going to eat up the rug 3) large area rug probably won’t fit in my washing machine (though I do have a high capacity machine)?

For those of you who have washable rugs, can I please have honest feedback on cleaning them? As I said, I’m worried my vacuum will eat it up making it impossible to get the dirt out. Thanks in advance!

Hey,

I would love to get this Ruggable rug (in the Pantone colour of the year, a light peach). I would get the version for a high traffic area but I was wondering how washable these things actually were. I have an infant and the rug would be near the entrance to the backyard. So lots of potential for grime.

I was just wondering about your experiences. Are they actually really readily washable or should I give up on my pipe dream?

EDIT: You guys are amazing! Thank you so much for your thoughts on the rug and recommendations

Potty training toddler.

We got a large wool rug for a steal at Home Goods but now after several years, it feels gross. We live in a rural area so it’s not easy to take it somewhere to clean. We wanted a rug in the living room since that’s where our son plays most of the time, and when he was crawling, we wanted something softer than hardwood.

We’ve spot cleaned it but it’s hard to clean.

Now I’m really intrigued by washable rugs (tumble, Ruggable). Has anyone had these? What’s your review?

Or maybe I’ll just get rid of rugs all together. I got rid of the rug in his room because I was tired of picking cheerios out of it and it was so much easier to sweep the hardwood! 😂

Currently have Ruggables and my new Miele HX2 will not function on them (the material is too thin, vacuum sucks up the rug and shuts it down).

I'm looking to replace the Ruggable with something that can be vacuumed, and also doesn't suck (velcro pad is a nightmare to deal with).

I've seen RugUSA Cloud rugs that I think *might* work, but wanted to see if anyone have experience prior to me making a purchase!

But that said I really like it and it’s easy to pop in the washer and lay back out because the back doesn’t stick to the rug pad. It’s held on by pockets at the corners. Instagram has been showing me lots of ads for tumble rugs. Does anyone have them and if so do you like/ dislike them? I stayed away from ruggable because I heard it’s basically just like a canvas on the floor and I’m wondering if tumble is the same. Thank you!

I feel like I am looking for the impossible but wondering if anyone has found something that meets all of these criteria:

  1. non-toxic: natural fibers, no flame retardants, no insecticides, natural dyes; but also somewhat interested in a few synthetic brands that seem relatively non-toxic (revival rugs) that seems to meet other criteria would love to hear opinions

  2. washable: could be laundry or just easy stain but we have a senior dog who will pee on this rug; don't mind of washing needs to be done in commercial laundry (from what I understand wool really doesn't do well with dog urine even if washable? is this true?)

  3. walkable for toddler: lorena canals is going to be the rec here I think but we ordered one and it just bunched up and seemed like it could make things hard for my clumsy toddler; I didn't get a rug pad so if there is a particular set up that will promise me a flat rug that is perfect for my toddler let me know

I am shopping for some rugs and was looking at ruggable rugs. They seemed pricey for what they are. I am ok with it if they last. Would appreciate any feedback on them. Any other buy it for life rugs you can suggest?
