GA is more marketing tool than real help; awstat is more than enough, IMHO. I have found that GA can slow site. And I do not like google at all. More on reddit.com

Not sure about other people, but I learn by tinkering. And since you probably don't have a site on which to implement GA, Google does have a demo account that would allow you to start exploring.

Most.. websites... use Google Analytics? There are many branches of analytics. Web Analytics typically falls into the marketing/sales side of the company. If you're spending any sort of money or time on marketing/sales, then web analytics is typically how you attempt to measure and quantify the success of your investments. Even if your investment is just time, it's still worth understanding what content works, how users are different, is anything broken, etc. Your website is often the first or most visible touchpoint that customers have with your organization. It certainly changes by industry. I worked at a consultancy, so I've worked with Google Analytics for almost every industry, though usually larger companies. Usually related to new user acquisition and growth, but depending on the site, also continued engagement for existing customers. Before this, I worked at a company that was a behind-the-scenes organization. They did not need to attract new customers, they didn't want people to know their name. In that role, I focused entirely on internal data and utilization. More on reddit.com

Most Analytics tools (e.g. Google Analytics...) are non-compliant to GDPR, and for others, you would have to show a cookie consent banner that negatively impacts the user experience.
Adding to that the fact that you would depend on a third party which may impact the performance of your web pages.
So, why do we insist on capturing users' data through these analytics third party when we can simply set up a log visualization tool at the server level, and get the important data from log files (number of unique visitors, viewed pages, referrers, user-agent...) ?
Maybe Analytics tools have the benefit of providing detailed metrics, but these would only be useful if your business depends on user behavior tracking, which isn't the case for many websites out there.
Am I missing something here?
