ok so call me an idiot but I literally just heard about this thing recently and it seems really important. Can someone give me a brief rundown of it, and what is the deadline for most colleges? What happens if I don't submit it?

This is a starting point ( https://profile.collegeboard.org/profile/ppi/participatinginstitutions.aspx ) but you should really look at the admissions/aid websites of every college to which you are applying to see if the CSS Profile is required. If it is required and you don't do it, you will not receive aid. It is a longer, more detailed financial aid application. Sometimes you are asked to upload copies of tax documents via IDOC ( https://pages.collegeboard.org/idoc ) after you submit the CSS Profile.
