I’ve got a wedding coming up soon where I’ll only be going to the reception. Not sure what to wear. Suit? Suit without a tie? Suit trousers and shirt without blazer? Chinos and an Oxford shirt or something? Chinos and a smart polo?

I’m in my 50s, so take any fashion advice from me with a big pinch of salt, but I went to a reception a few weeks ago and wore chinos and a nice shirt (tucked in). No tie. Pretty much smart casual, not too smart. It fit in nicely with what other people were wearing. If you’re really unsure if that works, wear a suit. A suit is always going to be suitable at a wedding. Plus you can drop the tie and jacket if you start to feel overdressed.

I am attending my colleague's wedding tomorrow and I have no clue on the protocol as this will be the first wedding I will be attending in the UK. I reached out to him and he mentioned that there is no dress code which makes things more difficult.
I am thinking of wearing a khaki chinos but not sure if I can pair it a white dress shirt(read too many posts stating that only the bride can wear white).

The “no white” rule only really applies to women. Men can wear a white dress shirt, but shouldn’t wear a white suit. (That is general fashion advice not exclusive to the wedding). The standard would be a suit. Wear a tie in case that is how people are dressed but wear a shirt that you would be comfortable wearing open-collared if the event is more casual. The jackets and ties normally all come off at the reception anyway once the speeches are done.
