Fire Pits - I'd like to build one that can burn wood or Gas | Trouble Free Pool
February 14, 2011 - Yeah, having a gas starter is one thing, but a NG ring like shown above will clog easily with ash and generally be a huge pain. It also will rust out quickly with all the heat from a wood fire + the alkaline ash, especially if that ash gets ...

r/Fireplaces on Reddit: Wood Burning Fireplace Gas Starter
December 30, 2022 -
Paperwork left by previous owners shows the fireplace was cleaned and inspected in the last year, but no note on the gas starter. We used it once over Christmas and it worked great, but didn't dare try the gas starter on a holiday. Looks quite small/isolated to the back right corner and haven't seen this style before. Anything I should look out for trying for the first time? Do gas valves get "stuck" if they aren't exercised regularly like water valves? I'm worried about it breaking or getting stuck. Should I even mess with it? TIA

OP. From what I can see, you have a gas pipe that is capped. No log lighter. Hard to tell from that photo. Also log lighters are for natural gas, which I assume you have. However. A log lighter is a pipe with holes in it. The wall valve is like a sink fosset. Turn it on a gas leaks out. If something is wrong, or time to turn it off, turn the valve off. It is a controlled gas leak. Safely using it is a matter of user comfort and understanding. The valves rarely get stuck, actually the opposite is more true as some older valves get 'loose' and develop leaks around the valve. You can check this by putting your noise next to the key valve. If you smell gas from the valve, it is time to replace it. Buy a log lighter, connect it to your pipe, and turn gas on very low. Lite the log lighter, increase gas flow slowly. Hopefully, you will get comfortable using it and starting wood fires this way.

Just wanted to add that I accidentally kicked the valve and heard/smelled gas, so I went ahead and lit it. Got a couple pictures of it on low and high (flamethrower!). Not as good as a standard log lighter but can definitely get the fire going. Posting this in case anyone has a similar setup and has questions about it. https://imgur.com/a/uFA0ZN8

Glass or Lava Rock burning with a gas kit - The fire bowl is 4” deep with the fire ring secured to the bottom of the bowl. In this configuration, you would fill the bowl with glass media or lava rock to just above the fire ring. The gas diffuses thru the media and is ignited at the surface.

Is it ok to pipe propane to our outdoor campfire to get the wood going? - Quora
Answer (1 of 5): Probably not a good idea although I use propane in my clay oven to maintain a flame with wood to bake outside. Propane is dangerous stuff. You need to study it a bit more than directly injecting propane not a fire. Think about the various components that make a gas grill work saf...
