Pick out a few stand-out details that set the tone and mood of the scene and let the reader's imagination fill in the rest. Address colour, smell, and sound, and use words that evoke a strong image. For example: Finally, they stumbled across the source of the forest's sickness. The suffocating tangle of vines parted briefly in a small clearing, where a single ray of honeyed sunlight pierced through the evergreen canopy. All around them the gentle trill of hidden insects echoed from the deepest shadows. It was here, in the small patch of mossy earth warmed by the sun, that the sickly-sweet aroma of rotting vegetation was at its most pungent, and on closer inspection they could see the tell-tale puffs of purple smoke as the poisonus fungus coughed out its corrupted spores. So, just to point out a few choices I made there: The vines are 'suffocating' and 'tangled', giving the impression that they are wrapped tight around trees, perhaps even carpeting the earth, and in such chaotic abundance that they've grown over and around each other in their haste to choke the life out of everything. The sunlight is 'honeyed', not 'golden'. Honey is gold already, but it also carries connotations such as being thick/treacly, sticky, and sweet, which all add (subconsciously) to the imagery. The ray of light 'pierced' the canopy, it wasn't simply 'there' and it didn't 'fall from'. To say it pierced the canopy is to suggest it had a real hard time getting through because the forest is so dense and secretive. The fungus 'coughs out' its spores, as opposed to just 'releasing' them into the air. If you imagine what this might look like, it's probably exactly what I had it mind while writing it. Brandon Sanderson says to think about what your character would notice. An architect notices buildings. A soldier maybe notices blind spots. A thief sees the easy marks. Those are superficial examples, but see if it helps.
