A firmware update shouldn't take more then 5-10 minutes at the most, and in a lot of cases won't even take that long. If you are still stuck at this screen then you may have no choice but to power cycle it and cross your fingers that it still starts up. Interrupting a BIOS flash is a very dangerous procedure and should never be done if you can prevent it by any other means, but if your stuck indefinitely at this screen then you won't have much choice. r/Alienware on Reddit: Stuck on system update
August 4, 2022 -

My laptop forced an update as I was shutting it down for the day and now it’s stuck on a screen saying “Please wait while we install a system update”. The power button and any key functions are disabled. Is it best to let it die then restart? Or is there something more I can do to combat this. It’s the x17 model btw

It’s been stuck here for about an hour now

r/Alienware on Reddit: New Firmware Update Ruined My PC?
April 15, 2025 -

Not even a half hour ago while I was watching a show on my PC (Aurora r16) when a popup appeared in the lower right from Alienware saying something about an update and my options were to restart now or restart later. I clicked the restart now button and my PC did a thing with a gray screen with a firmware update being installed. It finally restarts after the update completed. Next thing I know I try to sign in with my pin like normal and it says I have no pin and to create one but it refused to connect to the internet.

Long story short I had to hard reset everything and wipe my PC to a clean slate.

Does anyone know why this happened? I am utterly defeated being this PC is brand spanking new.

Any advice is appreciated 👍🏻

r/Alienware on Reddit: Windows update and now stuck on update screen
October 15, 2021 -

I had a notification that a Windows Update was needed and so I scheduled it to install late last night(around 1am) and when I woke up this morning my monitor(which is a Vizio tv) is stuck on the "Please wait while we install a system update" screen. It has been this way since I woke up at 7am and possibly even longer considering when the update took place.

Windows said it was a Firmware update and usually they never do this or take that long. Most times updates are done by the time I wake up.

I did sort of restart my PC and it booted back up to an update screen that said it was 30% complete, did a restarting screen and now it's back to the please wait screen.

I'm genuinely afraid to touch it at this point...

UPDATE: Just jumping in to say that my updates are not automatic, I do have to approve them. I just saw this one and didn't think anything of it. Also, I dunno if it matters but I can definitely hear the fan on my PC running(it usually does this if it's loading something) so I dunno if that is an indicator of it doing anything or not.

UPDATE.2: I turned it off and back on again and got it to boot up. It went to the update progress screen went from 34% up to 100% and then windows started up as if nothing had happened. Everything seems to be going okay so far, but if anything changes I will update again.

r/Alienware on Reddit: Alienware Update and SupportAssist no longer working.
March 16, 2023 -

Alienware M15 R4 - Over the last few days, I’ve had issues with Alienware Update and Support Assist.

I am now getting this error with Alienware Update:

https://i.imgur.com/q1Q8Hs0.jpg

Basically, it will not perform a scan. The only changes I’ve done were the Windows 11 March update a few days back and the upgrade to the 1.16.2 BIOS update. I have tried reverting it back to the 1.15 BIOS, but it still does the same thing.

Also, SupportAssist no longer works. When I try to run any of the options (driver update, hardware check, clean files, etc), it kicks back an error basically saying it can’t continue because another process is running. This has been going on longer than the Alienware Update issue, which only seemed to start today.

I have also fully uninstalled both programs using Revo Uninstaller Pro AND even deleted all leftover files. I have since re-installed Alienware Update and it still does it. I have not yet re-installed Support Assist. Figured if the Alienware Update wasn’t fixed, then neither would Support Assist. 🤷‍♂️

Alienware Update runs on my R13 Desktop just fine. So I know it’s not a server issue or anything…both systems are on V 4.8.0.

Thanks in advance for any help on this!

I don’t have a clue on what it is updating but it’s been stuck on this screen for just above an hour, which worries me. I was turning it off and there was an option to Update and Shutdown, so I picked that. An hour later, it’s still on this screen. This is the first update I’ve done since getting it. Is this normal?

r/Alienware on Reddit: Alienware Aurora R11 System Bios Update stuck on installing
March 6, 2021 -

Like an idiot, I foolishly used the "Alienware Update" app to update and did not think much of it. Now it has been on the installing phase for about 10 hours. It successfully downloaded all 3 updates and installed the first two (Alienware Command Center and some other non-important one), but it is stuck on Installing (3 of 3) which is titled "Alienware Aurora R11 System Bios." The green bar is still going but it has been doing this for nearly 10 hours. Having Google'd it, it seems like people have been having issues with this for years now. The only solution I noticed was some people were saying that there is some prompt you have to click "okay" on that hides behind the app, so if you minimize the app, then it shows and you can click okay. But I minimized it and there is nothing. Other people reported that if you click "cancel" it will tell you you cannot cancel but this might jump it to work. I clicked "Cancel" and it simply says that you cannot cancel anymore and the "Cancel" button greys out and that's it. I also noticed a random post saying that the user had issues with this update because of the keyboard they were using. I am using Razer and Logitech peripherals atm instead of the mouse/keyboard that came with the computer, but it does not seem logical that switching them mid-installation makes sense, especially since there is a warning on the updater that says not to unplug the power or peripherals during the Bios update...

I am terrified to force the computer to shut down as I heard that updating Bios is very delicate. I'm not sure what to do now. In case it matters, the computer is brand new, all I have done so far is:

- Install Norton with my previous Norton subscription

- Install Adguard

- Run Windows Update (the one built into Windows) and installed all of their updates (most of these were standard with the exception of a Logitech update that seemed to be for my keyboard as I have not yet installed any software for the peripherals I am using).

- Installed Chrome and also Adguard and Norton extensions for Chrome and Microsoft Edge

Would any of these steps be causing this issue? What is the best thing to do at this point? I was thinking the only option is to shut down the computer and hope it works, maybe restore it to factory settings since I have not installed/done much so far? Thanks!

EDIT: According to the auto-response below, it says that Support Assist has this known bug that shows the Bios update downloading, but in my situation it is in the installation phase and already finished downloading. It says to cancel (already tried) or kill Support Assist, but is this still safe to do when it is already in the installation phase. The fact that this ridiculous software is still included as part of new computers is absolutely mind-blowingly insane....

r/Alienware on Reddit: Alienware Update getting disabled from time to time...and some other small annoyances.
May 16, 2022 -

So, I've had my new R13 Desktop PC since near the end of Feb 2022 (12th Gen i7-12700KF, 32GB DDR5 RAM, RTX 3080, 750W PSU, Cryotek Liquid Cooling, Windows 11 - 21H2) and this has happened twice, so far. It's an easy fix, but it's ANNOYING when it happens.

What happens is, my Alienware Update program will not launch. At all. I get a message when attempting that says I need to "enable Dell Client Management". It's actually under Alienware Client Management and it seems to get disabled from time to time. I have to manually go into "Services" in Windows, then change it back to (Automatic, Delayed Start) before I can use it.

So, I'm posting here to see if anyone knows WHY this happens? I noticed when I woke my PC from sleep just a bit ago, Windows Update was downloading and installing "Alienware - SoftwareComponent - 1.1.51.0". As Alienware Update was working fine until today, my best guess is that this Windows update had something to do with disabling it (and is probably what happened the first time, as well)? Any idea what this Windows update does, anyway?

Also, a side question: For some reason the Alienware Update program that came with my system, in the list of Drivers & Software over on Dell Support (under my Service Tag), are from 6/4/2021, version 4.2.1. Now, my Alienware M15R4 laptop is at version 4.5.0 and it's always auto-updated itself. My R13 Desktop has...not (since it pulls from the Dell Support list and this software is nearing a year old now). I see version 4.2.1 is only compatible for Windows 10 and under, where the 4.5.0 version is Windows 11 compatible. So, logically, I removed the old one and found and installed 4.5.0 on my R13. Is that O.K. or is there a specific REASON why 4.5.0 is not "available" for my R13 on the Support site? My best guess is just poor management of optional software updates?

As an observation, I have noticed that Alienware Update on my M15R4 laptop works MUCH better than the one on my R13 Desktop. When I update on the desktop, sometimes it'll find an update and it'll fail. Then it'll never detect that update again - I have to go to the Dell Support site and manually download and update the driver from there.

Thanks, everyone and have a great day!
