What is the easiest way to convert between binary, hex, and decimal on paper?
Converting between binary and hex is super easy and can be done by just processing 4 bits at a time (4 binary digits = 1 hexadecimal digit). Converting to/from base 10 is a bunch of annoying math. No easy way around it. It'll be useful if you memorize the powers of 2. More on reddit.com
Need suggestion for calculator that can convert binary to dec/hex, and back from hex/dec to binary
I would have thought many scientific calculators could do this, but not the graphing calculators that would have more extensive memory features. For example, all of these have keys for BIN/HEX/OCT/DEC. It says 'operating system calculators' -- I wonder if this means the scientific & programming calculators typically included with Windows, Linux, etc. because these can generally do BIN/HEX/DEC conversions with features similar to basic dedicated scientific calculators. When they say 'memory' I don't think they're referring to the typical ability to store one or two values (M+/MR), they don't want you having extensive notes or programs. They're vintage and semi-collectible at this point but the Casio CM-100 'computer math calc' has these keys unshifted as does HP-16C. More on reddit.com
Do you all know how to convert between hex, octal, binary, and decimal off the top of your head?
No, that's what google's for. Programming isn't a test of memory, it's an application of knowledge. If you know what hex, octal, etc. are, it doesn't matter if you remember how to convert between them or have to look it up, the result is the same. More on reddit.com
