According to the Service Manual, 2,1 = System board failure Reboot and start tapping F12 when you see the Dell splash screen. When the F12 menu opens, look for the option to run diagnostics and run all of them, including RAM and extended drive tests. Copy error code, if any. Since it's not blinking this morning and PC booted ok, it might have been a 1-off issue, meaning the diagnostics won't find anything. You will just have to keep an eye on it for a while to see if the blink code re-appears. Some things to consider: Do you use a surge protector or power strip that might be failing? Power supply failing? Overheating? When did you get this PC and does motherboard battery need replacing? RAM module(s) and/or PCI-e card(s) need to be re-seated in their slots? Loose motherboard cable connector? Is PC still under warranty? Answer from RoHe on dell.com

May 15, 2025 - Remove CMOS battery and push the power button a couple of times to de-energize capacitors. Let it sit for 30 mins for any residual charges to drain. Then try powering it back on without battery and any peripherals. If you're lucky, it might post or return an error code other than cursed 2-1.

Thanks for the ideas. I run the Support Assist almost every night and without ever getting any messages except updates. I will to the diagnostic test but I don't think anything will pop up since it is running perfectly today. I will check the connections and pay attention to the fan. I think it is possible that it overheated. Thanks again

Thanks for the help and replies Found the date/year (Oct 2018) stamped into the chassis. Will pick up a battery in the next day or two and try resetting the CMOS, hopefully its not the motherboard. The only other things I can think of is I did have some problems with this PC when trying to install a M.2 SSD. See https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/optiplex-desktops/help-think-i-broke-my-computer/647fa20ef4ccf8a8de7716f8 If memory serves me right there was a little spacer that goes between the M.2 SSD and the motherboard that was missing so I used a small brass nut of the same size to act as a spacer before fastening the SSD to the motherboard. Maybe this could be causing the error code?

Each LED blink takes 1.5 seconds. The system will not shutdown when displaying the Diagnostic Error Codes. Diagnostic Error Codes will always supersede any other use of the LED. For instance, on laptops, battery codes for Low Battery or Battery Failure situations will not be displayed when Diagnostic Error Codes are being displayed. For diagnostics pattern 2-amber, 8-white connect an external monitor to isolate between system board or graphics controller failure.
