Has anyone else caught UPS consistently adding weight to packages?
What am I not understanding?!?!
Does UPS charge by weight or size?
UPS charged me $30 more by adding an inch to every package dimension — is this normal?
Why does UPS charge extra for large packages?
How do I calculate UPS shipping costs?
Can I avoid UPS surcharges?
I've had a lot of trouble with UPS in the last year, and I noticed that I was getting overage charges on the weight of larger packages. So I started weighing the packages and taking pictures of the scale and the dimensions on the box.
I have caught UPS changing the weight of packages consistently, as well as dimensions on some occasions (but the dimensions are written on the box as they're Uline boxes). This week I had two packages like this. I weighed them at 53 pounds (52.5). They were charged 56 and 59 pounds respectively, each with a $20 overage fee.
Has anyone else had this experience? I've called and complained, but UPS support is the worst in the world. It's a gauntlet designed to keep you out, and on numerous occasions now they've agreed to removed charges, but then never do it. Same with insurance. Recently they agreed that $1000 in damage was their fault, but then never paid, and stopped answering my emails about it. They just vanish, and never reverse the charges.
I'm thinking of complaining to my state's AG, as it's consistent fraud on their part.
Are others experiencing this? I'm sick of it.
Hi! I’m fairly new to shipping regularly with UPS and have a small business. I ship about 30-50 packages a month and have been noticing on my bills, the audited amounts are always WAY more- I even over estimate the dimensions after I measure and give myself 5lbs of extra weight. I was letting it go for smaller amounts, but being charged an EXTRA $280 on one package I paid $95 to ship is INSANE. The audited dimensions aren’t even possible with the size bag I was using. The weight was 80lbs and they have 141lbs.
What am I missing here?!
I also use U-Line boxes that have the exact dimensions on it (mostly using 10x10x36) and they ALWAYS add like 11x11x37 or 38) it’s not even possible. Has anyone else experienced this and what did you do?!?!
Thank you!!!
I’m trying to understand a billing adjustment I just got hit with.
I shipped golf clubs in a box that measured 4 × 48 × 4 (sold by Grainger, maybe they rounded down?) and weighed under 9 lb. After delivery, the carrier adjusted the dimensions to 5 × 49 × 5 in — adding an inch to every side — and suddenly the bill shows the package as 40 lb due to dimensional weight.
That 1” increase in each dimension bumped it into a much higher pricing tier and resulted in a ~$30 upcharge. $14 to $40
Is this normal? Do carriers round dimensions up like this, or is this something I should be disputing? Anyone had luck pushing back on similar “dimension creep” adjustments?
