Normal water has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Heavy water has Deuterium instead of hydrogen. Deuterium is special hydrogen, it has a neutron in the nucleus with the proton. It weight twice as much, per atom, thus it's "heavy". Great term for a gas that's lighter than air. It's mostly made by selecting the small fraction of natural hydrogen that's the Deuterium isotope. You can use nuclear reactors, but that's more expensive. Answer from WRSaunders on reddit.com

r/allthemods on Reddit: [ATM9TTS] Any better way to get Heavy water and better energy generation ?
August 19, 2024 -

I have built 4 Mekanism Fusion reactor but building more pump with filter upgrade is just too annoying so I'm looking for any alternatives to get heavy water. Building Gadgets mod doesn't copy inventory so I need to install filter upgrades manually, which is a pain. Also is there any turbine alternatives that consume steam for large amount of power ? I can just build more but my FPS already tank like crazy when I look in the direction of my turbines combined with the fact that they already have a huge impact of TPS.
At this point even a new mod or a config change will do, I have the resources to build new stacks of turbine and filter pumps but "horizontal" scaling isn't really my thing, especially with how manual it is with the pumps.

Deuterium Oxide
Deuterium Oxide( Heavy Water )chemical formula: D2O( liquid )High purity Deuterium Oxide (99.8% - 99.9% purity), also known as Heavy Water. Deuterium is an isotope of Hydrogen. As in a molecule of 'normal' water, two Hydrogen atoms are bound to an Oxygen atom. When the Hydrogen atoms are replaced with Deuterium, you've got Heavy water. Unlike the other isotope of Hydrogen known as Tritium, Deuterium is not radioactive. Deuterium Oxide is about 10% heavier than ordinary water (which is why it got the trade name of Heavy Water). Deuterium Oxide is often used to moderate Neutrons in nuclear react
