r/windows on Reddit: Does HP CoolSense actually do any significant?
May 26, 2013 -

It's on my laptop, but I have no idea whether as to it works or not. I am just trying to delete all bloatware on my HP laptop, but really unsure about this coolsense one and would like to ask if anyone knows anything about and, if they would reccommened installing it.

P.S. I play games on my laptop, and the bottom of the laptop/ fan outlet area heats up when playing, if that means anything.

-Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Ok, so I turned it off and it was significantly better. Whenever I played a game previously, the fan was running at a high speed and very hot, it now runs quietly and less heat with the HP CoolSense turned off (which the irony is, CoolSense did not cool my lap top at all).

February 10, 2021 -

I have an HP Envy X360 and the fam has always been really loud.

I usually go into the HP Command center and control the settings under Thermal Profile, but I also turn off HP CoolSense from the taskbar (its a hidden icon when you click on the up carat in the bottom left).

Recently I ran a scheduled update and the coolsense icon vanished, I also cant find the software anywhere on my computer.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do for this, or ways to control the fan in general? It seems like a big issue online

Hello Reddit,

A few months back I was closing all the programs in my tray that didn't need to be open on my hp pavilion notebook and I accidentally closed HP CoolSense. At the time I just thought "Eh whatever I'll open it again later". But since then I've noticed my computer heating up more, the fan getting louder, and a major decrease in performance. In my programs and features in control panel it says HP CoolSense is still installed but when I search it up in the windows search bar nothing comes up. My games are running like crap and I can't really game anymore. If anyone knows what I should do please comment.

Thanks.

August 16, 2015 - While you can safely remove most of the HP software, I would not recommend removing the 3D DriveGuard if it's a notebook. ... DriveGuard protects your HDD in case you drop your notebook or move it too fast, by turning off the HDD to avoid permanent damage. ... I would also keep coolsense, it uses a temperature sensor on the rear surface to detect which surface the notebook is on and adjusts the fan profile accordingly.

Just got a new laptop and see a couple HP apps on it that just seem unnecessary. Do I need to keep these in here to allow it to cool and run properly with the design of this specific unit? It's a HP envy x360 with a Ryzen 5 and a Vega 8 graphics.

So, the thing is that recently I had to reset my laptop because it had some problems. After a full reset, I found that all the HP built-in apps like HP Support Assistant, HP Coolsense, Pen Control etc. are missing. How do I get these back?

May 15, 2017 -

EDIT: If you have this laptop and the same issue as me, this is cause by HP's Coolsense, a propietary module that breaks ACPI standards.

See, I'm using Arch, fully updated, but if I unplug my cooler, laptop overheats a lot. (70 C°, acording to lm_sensors)

This doesn't happen in Windows, and I've tried both powertop, to gain more battery too, and boot options to enable aspm for hardware that doesn't support it

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_osi='!Windows 2012' pcie_aspm=force acpi=force acpi_enforce_resources=lax radeon.dpm=1 resume=UUID=52b4b03a-6ec1-48ef-aa8c-252d21138ac5 radeon.audio=1 drm.vblankoffdelay=1 acpi_backlight=vendor

The laptop I use is this.

It should be noted that without the boot options, I still overheat without the cooler.

Thanks!

November 23, 2014 - Thanks for your reply. After switching to win 7 I installed hp support assistant whithin which comes coolsense 1.0. Then I found somewhere that this works also on win 8 so again I switched to win 8 and installed the old hp support assistant and it worked but it took me an entire day.
