Hi everyone, If your Dell laptop won’t power on and you notice the white LED lights up for a second and then turns off, here’s what it means and what you can try. What Does This Indicate? This usually points to a power-related issue, it could be the adapter, battery, DC jack, or in some cases, the motherboard. Troubleshooting Steps Try these steps in order: Perform a Hard Reset Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery (if removable). Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual power. Reconnect the battery and adapter, then try powering on. Check the Power Adapter Ensure the adapter light is on and stable. Dell laptops have issues with the power regulation chip. What you need to do is pull the back cover off and unplug both the main battery and the CMOS battery. You need to be very very careful removing the CMOS battery. Do not pull the battery out by the wires. I find it’s best to use a plastic pry tool of some form, whether it be a spudger, old credit card or some other thin semi-semi blunt plastic tool. If you rock the two sides back and forth then push out the connector down the center, it will come out. The CMOS battery looks like this: https://guide-images.cdn.ifixit.com/igi/rWTpWLLvSdZ36TQU.large Once you have both batteries unplugged, hold the power button for 60 seconds. Yes, really, 60 seconds. Plug both batteries back in and plug in the charger, then attempt to turn the laptop on. If all went well, the CPU fan should spin over a few times before the machine finally boots back up. Put the cover back on and you’re done. Source: I’ve been working in IT Support/Management with Dell as our main vendor for the last 12 years.

I don't even see any lights on. Typically something lights up to acknowledge power is coming in. Could be charging port. Could be battery. Could be board.

The reset procedure actually is to disconnect the battery and the adapter. Then press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Then reconnect everything and try to reboot. Run a diagnostic procedure by tapping F12 immediately at boot. If it runs properly watch for any errors. That flashing amber light means a low battery charge. It is possible that the battery needs to be replaced or that the adapter is not charging the battery properly. If the adapter light stays on then a short is not likely. If possible try another Dell adapter. It is also possible that the DC jack is having problems and needs to be replaced. Least likely cause, the MB charging circuit is not working.

Thank for the reply, but as I said, I tried turning the laptop on without the battery. It doesn't help. And I have 2 different chargers (both original dell, one that came with the laptop and a new one that is also 180 w and 19,5 V and is listed as compatible with my laptop). I even tried different plugs in my house. I would hope the charger or battery would be the issue, but the battery is out and the laptop won't turn on with either of the chargers. I will just bring it to the professionals again and hope that they will actually fix it or at least tell me that it can't be fixed instead of claiming that nothing is wrong. Thank you all for the replies.

Thank you for your reply. I tried turning the laptop on without a battery, just plugged in. It does the same thing. It won't turn on. Yes, they have a warranty. I will have to take it back, but considering the gave me my laptop 'repaired' twice, and the second time sent it back saying nothing is wrong (even if they saw the isuue when I brought it in), I kind of lost faith in them.

Answer (1 of 4): Assuming you're certain that power is getting to the charger, the electronics inside it have likely failed. This could have happened due to a power surge, a defective component, mistreatment, or (though much less likely in practice) a fault in the laptop has overloaded the charge...

I assume this is an Inspiron 14 5410. Try a reset first of all. Disconnect the adapter and the battery, then press and hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Now reconnect everything and try to boot. If that does not work then plug in the adapter and watch to see if the adapter light turns off. If so then that indicates a short in either the adapter, DC Jack, or the MB.

Thank you! I had the same problem as the original poster. I bought a new one of the parts shown in the picture provided by DELL-Amogh G. It was a huge ordeal to change out that part, because it required literally disassembling the entire laptop. But, it was well worth all the time and trouble because my N5110 is working like new once again. Thanks a million.. (I found the part on Amazon for $19 'Dell Inspiron 15r (N5110) Vostro 3550 DC Power Jack / VGA / USB IO Circuit Board - PFYC8' and it's been working perfectly for a month now.)

Hi noushadkan, Please check if the power port is loose, sticky or broken. You may drain the residual power of your computer and re-calibrate the battery by following the steps below: Power off your computer. Remove all the external peripherals (printers, scanners or any other USB device) connected to your computer. Please remove the AC adapter and battery of your computer. Press and hold the power button of your computer for 10-15 seconds to drain the residual power. Release the power button Keep the battery out for atleast 2 - 3 hours. Then insert the battery and charge it overnight with the system powered off. Insert the battery in and connect the AC adaptor. Then power on the computer and see if it works. Another step you may try is to use an alternate AC adapter and see if that helps. Please share the findings.
