July 16, 2021 - I wanted the pit close to the wall so that people sitting on the wall could be close to the fire, and on the opposite side, plenty of room for chairs. The forms were removed and I brought in 12 yards of topsoil to fill around the pit area, gradual slope out into the yard.

A little explanation -- in the back yard there was an existing outdoor fireplace built around 1940 or so, but it was in deplorable condition. The soil had migrated into the firebox, and basically the previous owners had used it as a planter base. In the beginning I mowed around it, but over time began to form a plan to scallop out the area in front of it to allow for seating (and naturally, beer/wine drinking).
