1930-1939 | Fashion History Timeline
Despite these departures from the prevailing mode of the previous decade, the popular styles of the early 1930s were similar in their simple lines to the popular garçonne look of the twenties. But while the simplicity of the 1920s created a sack-like silhouette free from curves, the simple lines of the early thirties hugged those curves, creating a soft, feminine silhouette. Cally Blackman, a lecturer on the history of fashion at Central Saint Martins, writes in 100 Years of Fashion, “By the early 1930s, the fashionable silhouette was evolving into a slender, elongated torso with widening shoulders and a neat head with softly waved short hair” (13).

During the 1930s, sports and outdoor actvities became fashionable.

April 5, 2024 - In this decade, fashion photography made leaps and bounds. Vogue’s first-ever photographed cover arrived: a sporty image of a bathing beauty in a red suit by Edward Steichen for Vogue’s July 1, 1932, issue. The photo positioned its cover girl as an Olympian; even without the flowing ripples of a draped gown, she appeared as a Greek icon. Find below a breakdown of all these 1930s fashion trends and more.

July 19, 2024 - The 30s and the 70s are my two favourite fashion decades. SO many interesting frills and lines. ... One of the eras that was the most flattering to a woman's figure. Bias cut fabrics, empire-ish yet fitted waist, mid-calf hems, flowy, fluttery fabrics. I hope those silhouettes come back in style again soon. ... Actual history with photos, if that's possible? The one that would be easier. ... 1930s fashion source book is very good, and apparently the only one I have on hand that's history, too.

When discussing historical fashion, why do people rarely mention the 1930s? I find it the most interesting decade in fashion. Why don't people talk about it more? - Quora
Answer (1 of 5): Hmmm I’m not sure what fashion you are referring to in the 1930s and 1940s. Fashion became extremely functional and that means covering, and protecting the body with as few resources as possible. Fashion pretty much stayed where it was at the beginning of the 30s decade and into ...
