r/askTO on Reddit: Cineplex Varsity screens - anyone have insider tips on this old theatre?
October 12, 2022 -

sorry for this very specific question. but does anyone know if, out of the regular screens they have, one is "better" than the other? i noticed that for the movie i want to see, depending on the time, it's playing in a theatre with 465 seats available, 201 seats available, 150 seats.. etc. I guess my question is, are the regular screens with less seats better, or the one with more seats? thanks.

Finallyyyyyy my time to shine lol, I love the Varsity. The cinema (#8) with 465 seats is actually pretty flat. So, sitting in one of the back rows makes you feel like you're actually really far from the screen, because you're not high up, it's not stadium seating. So, for that one, I like to be at least around row N or closer. Cinemas 7 is the smallest (other than the VIP cinemas - I do like the Varsity but don't recommend for VIP), with 122 seats. I don't love it. It's also kind of a flat floor with no slope, and the screen is smaller than 8, so I always feel like it's too far away. Plus it's tucked in the corner. I just don't like it. Cinemas 1-6 are the best ones. They're the mid-size ones, they all have the section of two or three rows sectioned at the front, then a an aisle, and then the rest of the seats. These ones are stadium seating, which means you walk in and then walk up the stairs to get to your seat. So I find you get the better view in those cinemas. Plus, in each of those cinemas, there are two rows of comfier, roomier seats. They're not recliners, though. They used to cost more, pre-COVID (they were called Premium) but they don't anymore. But that means that you can't tell which ones they are just by looking at the app. However, I have been there enough to know. If it's a cinema where rows G&H look sort of indented from the others, those are the premium rows. Those are cinemas 1-3. For an example, look at Thursday (tomorrow's) showings of Bros. If it's a cinema where rows E&F look indented, those are the premium rows, cinemas 4-6. For an example, look at tomorrow's showings of Lyle Lyle Crocodile. I always sit in those rows. Like I said, they're not recliners (I wish), but they are comfier and you have more space. I can settle in more. And now they cost the same, so why not. edit in 2024 to say: it still holds true that Cinemas 1-6 are my favourites but they no longer have the premium rows, so I actually stopped going to the Varsity as often as I did because now the seats are just the same as they are at every Cineplex and it's a bummer. it's still the stadium seating, so I prefer them over the flatter ones of 7 or 8 but the premium rows were such a treat!

The original cinema is now screens 7 and 8 IIRC, the ones first past the fish tank, as you turn right from the entrance, and have more seating in a slight inclined floor with two aisles. 7 is the one that can show 70mm film still. If you want a very big screen, then the one with 465 will be one of the two original screens. But smaller screens in smaller cinemas means you can be closer, like their VIP which would be the logical choice for a non 70 mm presentation which is 99.9% of what they show. Just double checked, 7 and 8 are the original, THX certified screens.

December 28, 2024 -

I went to watch Sonic 3 at a 9pm showing on Boxing Day and genuinely had high hopes that for the first time in 5 theatre viewings I wouldn’t see a light up phone screen in the rows in front of me. Unfortunately, a group of 5 teenage boys sat in the row right in front of me and a few of them were on their phones the ENTIRE movie. When the lights dimmed and the movie started, I tapped him on the shoulder to politely ask if he can get off his phone (as well as his friend), only for his friend to turn down his brightness and go, “is this okay?”.

After not heeding my warning, I just decided to get up and get a staff member. At first, the staff member was going to leave them with a warning, but when their other friends found out what was happening, one started clapping really loudly to cause a scene. They told me “it’s not that deep” and when I reminded them that people pay money to be here, they responded with “we only paid two dollars to be here!”.

My question is: why has it gotten this bad? Every single showing I have been to (ex. Wicked, Laufey’s concert showing, TMNT, Spiderverse, etc), I have had people shamelessly recording the movie, pulling out their phones to take a photo of the opening title screen, or just using their phones to scroll. Theatre goers have all gotten less considerate for people’s viewing experiences.

I miss the old days during End Game where we would all enjoy the movie watching experience together without the distracting illumination of someone’s phone screen.

EDIT: to people who disagree with what I had said or to those who are telling me that I should expect this because Sonic 3 is a movie for kids:

  1. The no-cellphone rule has been implemented since forever (Tommy Texter)

  2. The kids were amazing during the showing that I went to and I had absolutely no problem with. What I’m talking about are teenagers who went to a movie they had no interest in watching just to scroll the entire time. Also, they left before the movie even finished. Why should I, someone who pays to go watch the movie I want, stay home and wait months for a digital copy instead of those uninterested in actually watching?

  3. This is a universal experience that people are having in not just movies for kids. Teenagers are teenagers and kids are kids. The kids weren’t the ones on phones.

  4. The teenagers were literally sitting in the seats directly in front of me. Low brightness doesn’t matter when it’s in your direct line of vision to the screen. Of course I’m going to say something LOL

  5. What I mean in terms of the End Game thing is what I miss is a genuine solidarity in movie watching experiences. Laughing at jokes all together, etc.

Overall in my post, what I would like to highlight is the lack of accountability/consequence society is slowly moving towards as they were genuinely surprised I told an employee about their behaviour. Teenagers are not the only ones checking their phones during a movie. I went to watch Suzume in theatres a year or so ago during a late screening and even then adults were disrespectful (a guy was full out having a phone call the entire movie). Have a happy new year everyone!
