Damp cotton rag/microfiber cloth. That's it. "Tung oil" and "teak oil" are finishes, they are meant to go on raw wood or over previous coats of themselves. It's either got a lacquer (most likely) or polyurethane (second most likely) finish on it already. The best thing to do is just use it. Use coasters. Put something under hot cookware or serving dishes before setting them on the surface. Slightly soapy water and a damp cloth for spills, then a clean cloth with just water, then dry with a clean cloth. Windex for stubborn spills. Anything else can damage the finish (next to try would be alcohol, then mineral spirits, and finally acetone as a last resort before moving on to sanding it down and refinishing it) If it's even a half decent finishing job with modern lacquer or poly, it should last 20 years of regular use before ever wearing through the finish. Could last 100 or more if you use a tablecloth, coasters, etc. Short story: it won't be good with applying tung or teak oil on it, and no further finish is necessary. Edit: it's an acrylic finish, which is just like poly. Treat the same as stated above. Answer from WoodworkingisOVER on reddit.com

June 29, 2021 -

We just bought this acacia wood table from crate and barrel:

https://www.crateandbarrel.com/yukon-natural-92-dining-table/s335376

We really like the light gloss the table has and weโ€™d like to keep a similar finish. I just want to make sure I protect the wood as it is a dinner table and we live in a climate that will be more humid in the summer and more dry in the winter.

Iโ€™ve read tung oil would be good but not sure if that would be similar to what it already has on it. I could see it having some kind of wax on it now.

February 29, 2024 -

We purchased some outdoor acacia furniture 2 years ago and it's starting to show signs of weathering. Need some advice on how to get rid of the greying / weathering.

First two photos are the dining table, second photo is the coffee table. I used teak oil last year, and used it again a few days ago to get it ready for the summer. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

You can reduce or remove the silvering from weathering on the table with oxalic acid. I make a saturated solution, where there are undissolved crystals in the bottle. Apply it as many times as necessary, letting it dry between applications. When you're happy, neutralize it with baking soda in water, rinse that off. I'm not so sure on the coffee table, the brown color tells me that there is something else going on there in addition. As far as prevention, understand that there is NO clear finish for wood that will withstand outdoor conditions. Not yet. And oils are useless. The best you can do is a good spar varnish with UV blockers, at least two coats. And even then it won't last two years unless you buy or make covers for when it is not in use. Hint: don't varnish just the top, do both sides equally, or the unvarnished underside will absorb humidity and cup. There was a similar query in today's post about a circular outdoor table with benches; skip forward and read it.

Hi! It's totally normal for acacia wood to develop a greyish patina over time when exposed to rain and UV light. This is a natural process that happens with many durable woods like acacia, teak, or robinia. Good news: โž” The greying only affects the surface color and does not reduce the woodโ€™s durability at all. If you prefer to keep the original warm tone, applying a quality UV-protective oil (like teak oil, or specific outdoor wood oil) once or twice a year is a good practice, exactly like you did. Otherwise, you can also lightly sand the surface before oiling if you want to refresh the color. Hope this helps! ๐ŸŒฟ
