Is there anything stopping me from selecting the education pricing when buying a Mac even though I am not enrolled at an institution? Do they ever check at any point in the process? Is this uncouth of me to ask? Thanks

I am looking to buy a new macbook and ipad. I know that in apple educational store, the prices are $150 and $100 off respectively and they’ll give out i think $100 coupons for next purchase in apple store.

I thought this was a permanent thing and as long as i am a student, i can take advantage of this offer. So i was so shocked when i looked at the apple store to see that the educational promo (voucher and lower price) is ending on 9/30.

For those of you who are experienced with apple, do you know if they will replace this with other offer? Or is this “offer ending” legit and not just a way for them to force you to purchase now? All this time im always under the assumption that apple gives students discounts all the time.

Mod, please just delete if this is an inappropriate question to ask in this sub. If so, can you please let me know which is the correct sub

i’m starting college this fall and am looking to buy a new macbook. i’ve already settled on the new 2025 macbook with the m4 chip. but i know they run sells before school, i’m just not sure when it starts and i could possibly get a pair of airpods (which im in need of because i just lost one). but would the discount be more than $100 off? i also know that apple has an eduction store online that i could just buy anytime, but it only takes $100 off. would it be worth it to go ahead and buy it now or wait for their school promo? thanks!

August 29, 2024 - it’s not a scam if you go to the regular website you can see the difference in price between a regular item and something with an EDU discount. apple runs these promos every year for back to school. they usually last until labour day. the promo is that you get a gift card on top of the lower EDU pricing. you get emailed the gift card after the purchase goes through and you pick it up. you’ll then have to apply the gift card to your apple store account.

October 30, 2021 - An unofficial community about Apple and all of its devices and software. ... Woah. That was a big loophole they just closed. Previously you didn’t need anything, not even an .edu email to qualify. ... I think education customers buying more than one device per category would be a really small minority. I’m sure if the had an excruciating circumstance, like a damage or stolen device, an exception could be made by calling in or visiting a retail store.

I plan on replacing my 2020 MacBook Pro since the performance is severely lacking. Looking at the 2025 MacBook Air since I need a new laptop for when I begin my master’s program in August 2025 but the educational offers did not seem like they were worth it for me. I already own AirPod pros and so does everyone in my family. I wouldn’t need a mouse, trackpad, or a keyboard because I wouldn’t be connecting it to any monitors and see no use of them if I’ll be using the laptop as is anyways. I’m really stuck on what to pick and was wondering if there is a way to just use an additional discount towards the purchase instead?

I know it’s probably a silly question but I don’t see a need in a free offer if there is any way to use the total of the additional offer towards a discount instead.

tl;dr - Apple picks favorites in their retail store when they want to give discounts. Please exploit their Education discount and save $200 - Buy Mac Studio with M4 Max - Education - Apple

I bought my Mac Studio full price a week ago. I then recalled when I bought an Apple Watch the employee gave me a 10% discount since I worked at Microsoft (they proactively asked).

When calling customer support for a partial refund, they said I would have to return and computer and re-purchase through the third party employee store because different employers have different discounts for different items. I told them that the employee in store gave me 10% discount. The support agent said the retail stores can override the system and give discounts. We agreed it would probably be best to go into a store for the partial refund.

In store, the employee made it seem like things would work out. Then, after walking away and coming back, they told me they wouldn't be able to apply the discount and only accessories (e.g. keyboards, mice, and displays) are covered by company discounts.

I was kinda disgusted with how they were so inconsistent about this, so I returned my Mac Studio.

Looking online, you can just checkout as a guest from the Education Store (seemed to work with my .edu email but maybe not required), and get the original discount I wanted. Please exploit this as I probably won't re-buy, but would enjoy seeing apple lose some money to people already buying this.

r/apple on Reddit: Education Discount Online but Pick-Up in Store
January 28, 2019 -

So I'm planning a road trip to Portland and would like to order some products from Apple with the education pricing. I know it's easier to order online and have it delivered without verification but I plan to pick up the items in store to avoid taxes.

Will Apple just check my student ID or will they also ask to verify my uni email as well when I come to pick it up?

Also, would it be better to order online with the education pricing and just have someone else go in and pick it up for me? Assuming Apple won't be able to verify that I'm a student or not through whoever is picking up the items for me.

*UPDATE*: Picked up my ipad pro/2nd gen pencil and ended up purchasing air pods as well! Everything went smoothly and I even ordered an ipad pro for my mom as well with the education discount. The store I went to was huge, even bigger than the one I usually go to in Seattle or Costa Mesa so I feel they were more focused on pumping people in and out of the store.

r/mac on Reddit: Buying with Apple Education Pricing in a country where I don't study — will they verify at pickup?
July 21, 2025 -

Hi everyone!

I'm a university student from Brazil and I'm traveling to Canada soon. I was wondering if it's possible to buy a MacBook using Apple Education Pricing while I'm in Canada, even though I don't study there.

When purchasing online through the Canadian Apple Education Store, I noticed that they don’t ask for any student verification upfront (no UNiDAYS or document upload). But I’m concerned about whether they verify your student status at the moment of in-store pickup or delivery.

I also read that during the Back to School period, when Apple includes a free pair of AirPods with the purchase, they tend to be stricter with verification. So I’m not sure if they might ask for proof at pickup or cancel the order.

My questions:

  • Has anyone ever purchased a Mac (or other device) through the education store in a country where you don’t actually study?

  • Do they ask for student ID, enrollment letter, or other proof when picking it up?

  • Has anyone had their order cancelled or rejected for this?

Would love to hear from anyone who’s been through a similar situation recently. Thanks in advance!

June 25, 2020 - The education store discount is a huge draw for lots of people and you can instantly see how many orders are being placed. It's likely they saw the numbers from 3 days and was like, eh, not worth it.

I’m wondering if anyone here has used the education discount at Apple in store as a recently graduated year 12 moving into uni? I don’t have an acceptance letter yet from RMIT (I’ll be getting one on the 23rd of December).

Did you need proof of enrolment to use the discount when buying in store/online?
