October 17, 2022 - Edit: I got rid of the qcode 42 by removing a GPU support wth RGB. I had it daisy chain to my Lan Li’s strimmer cable. It posted to code A9 which means set up. I got back into windows, stable stress test with 3D Mark. Edit2: I stress test the system with prime, memtest, 3D mark, everything was stable. What was strange was the bios giving me a tighter memory timing , it went from 50cl to 40cl …..and I notice new profile in the updated asus bios/uefi

February 3, 2023 - 2/10 of these crashes were hard crashes, including the final crash where I got stuck at the 42 code. The other 8 crashes I remained in windows and the PC ran fine. I'm using a temporary Cooler Master Hyper 212 CPU cooler because the Kraken 360mm AIO was delayed for shipment. Maybe this caused the problem? Multiple people are talking about similar Q 42 issues on Reddit.

Anyone know the solution to this q-code error?

I am getting BSOD frequently and have tried installing a clean windows from a bootable USB drive, purchased the same new ram to swap.

My computer will boot and make it to windows.

I am thinking it's a faulty motherboard, however, how can I tell?

I am just past the 30 day mark so I heard people RMA their board. Need to look into that process if it's the Mobo.

What is the BSOD error? Just knowing the error is great, but fails to tell us the actual error.

So I'm not getting to post, when I boot, fans come on, rgb lights up, but I get the dram yellow light, and q-code 42 (which isn't listen in mobo's q-code table.) No display.

When I first got the problem, I called Asus CS, found out my ram was incompatible, so I ordered new memory from the list they sent me, popped it in and... nothing has changed.

I've also tried a single stick of memory in each dimm slot, reseating CPU, updating BIOS, and clearing CMOS.

Specs:

Asus Rog Maximus XI Hero

i7 9700k

Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x16g) CMK32GX4M2B3200C16

NVidia 2080ti

Would greatly appreciate any help, thanks in advance!

Edit: SOLVED, I forgot to mention I also had a firewire card, which is what ended up being the problem, oddly enough. Siig NN-FW0012-S1 Dp firewire 800 pcie

I removed that and it starts up just fine. Still need to find a solution for working firewire though.

The only thing I can think of is trying a 4 x 8GB kit instead of a 2 x 16GB kit. It's possible that either the mobo or the CPU are having trouble with the 16GB DIMMs in some way.

So I’m coming over from an old Intel 8700k build and this has been absolute hell

I just slapped the board in (had to do an exchange because the previous one wouldn’t post either) with the following specs:

Cpu: Ryzen 9 7950x Gpu: RTX 3090 FE Ram: Corsair DDR5 Dom Plats for AMD - 2x16 6000 MHz 3 sata drives, 1 blank, 2 with just games and data 2 fresh nvme drives in the motherboard

And I keep getting code 42 with the q led lot being third from the left. I have done bios flashback to get the latest version but I’m at wits end on how to move forward, especially as 42 isn’t appearing in the manual! Any help would be appreciated as this has been the last two days of my life trying to get sorted.

Just got error code 99 too. Trying to fiddle with ram and pulling the drives with data off as well to at least get to bios

Error 42 for me went away after underclocking the RAM (leave xmp disabled in bios). Still early days of DDR5 so if it's not on the short QVL list it's down to luck. I got 64GB of 5200MHz (Corsair CMH32GX5M2B5200C40, 2 kits) that I couldn't get to work at that rating if my life depended on it. Kept sticking on Code 42 with a white QLED, gave up after waiting like an hour each (DDR5 takes a long time to boot, but an hour? = WTF) x 5 tries with various changes before resorting to letting it drop to auto settings (4800MHz, dunno what the timings are, auto as well). Sucks I paid like an extra $50-100 for overspec'd RAM that I couldn't get to use as advertised, maybe that will change with a newer bios if/when available. I guess it could be worse, some people simply can't get 4 sticks of certain vendors to work so are stuck with using half the ram they expected (ie 32GB instead of 64GB, a far bigger downgrade).

Just installed my 4090 on my X670e Hero, and everything was working fine, all of the sudden had a hard crash and get get past Q Code 42. Tried clearing cmos, one stick of ram, no GPU, bios flashback. Let it try to boot for two hours, nothing has worked. Any suggestions before I return it and try something else before my return window closes.

I just got this error did you RMA yours? its what I'm doing now, I'm very bummed its a no post no nothing just code 42 and there is no troubleshooting for this

Me too! I got a 4090 with 7950x, and like you, everything was fine till a crash and code 42.
