January 17, 2025Anyone using avg antivirus in 2025? Is it worth it?
Windows Defender is pretty much what you described. Don't even have to set it up, it's already working when you install Windows. If you want something very slightly better, Bitdefender Free but it's finicky when it comes to allowing something it incorrectly quarantines. Pretty sure AVG is owned by Norton now. It hasn't been good for a long time. More on reddit.com

AVG prior to Avast/some other tech company bough it, specifically AVG 8.5 and older, was pretty good. Those Czech techbros sold it for a little fortune left for them after they screwed up the antivirus with unnecessary addon like PC Cleaner and horribly written antirootkit software. (edit: horrible "Internet Security" firewall too). Trust me: I used to be level 2 tech agent when they had support center in South East Asia and Australia. More on reddit.com

It’s far from the best Antivirus though and I wouldn’t recommend it.

ATTN ALL: Avoid AVG like the plague.
They have a free trial that auto renews for an annual subscription without any prior notification, and when you contact them they'll agree to cancel and refund (after many efforts to keep some of your money), and even then they'll give you a case number for the refund and just not do it. I'm currently listening to hold music a month after my refund was supposed to arrive and they still have my account active, and are still trying to route me around their extremely unhelpful support ecosystem.
You'd be better off returning to monkey than bothering to protect yourself with AVG, don't give them any of your info, they're absolutely corrupt.
