r/aws on Reddit: Amazon/AWS Loop Interview Misconceptions
May 23, 2024 -

Just completed my final loop interview today and was in for quite a surprise. Prior to the interview, of course I did my due diligence and researched all that I could about the loop and read about others experiences. I was quite surprised that many parts of my loop differed from the experiences and advice found online so I thought I’d share my experience in case it would help others:

  1. I was told that each interviewer would be assigned two LPs And ask you a question or two for each LP. Because of this I prepared about two stories format for each LP. However, many of my interviewers asked me 3, 4, even 5 questions! I was nowhere near prepared with that many stories for each LP.

  2. I also read on here that we were not supposed to reuse a story that was already shared in the previous phone screens however, this turned out to not be accurate either according to my recruiter. I explicitly asked him if that was OK and if anyone from the loop would have access or see my phone screen answers. He told me the loop interviewers do not look at notes from the phone screen, and that it would be fine to tell those stories again in the loop. Not sure if this was just my situation or if it changes depending on the interview.

  3. Another thing I see here a lot is that people claim that you only get a call after the loop if there’s good news. Some people say that they don’t hear back until the fifth day and that’s when the recruiter sends a calendar invite for a phone call to touch base. However, this was also different for me. My recruiter told me in the very beginning what day they would be debriefing and making a decision. He also explained that he would call me immediately after.

Overall I felt that my recruiter was a little… all over the place and it threw me off a bit.

Anyway the loop was probably one of the hardest interviews I’ve ever done in my life. I hope this could help or provide another perspective to anyone that’s about to go through it. Good luck!

AWS loop interview outcome , said position been filled and waiting for the new role to open
AWS HM here. You got an “inclined loop,” so you’ll get an offer. Usually that means it rapidly follows, however speaking for my part of the world, hiring is a mess right now—we’re really only recently ramping up non-student and non-emergency hiring, and there’s a ton of internal movement after hiring was frozen for almost two years. So, not enough recruiters and HMs are squeezed on open reqs/trying to fill seats. It might be that you land in a different team, maybe HM just needs approval to open another req and the approval chain isn’t being very responsive. It happens, and we are not good at keeping candidates in the loop. Conversely they won’t want you to walk either, so if you have a competing offer or are interviewing elsewhere, you can (should) mention this as it tends to get the right priority from your recruiter. My guess is they are just overwhelmed rn and you’ll hear back eventually, but there is no reason to sit and stay silent—they work for you and are incentivized to find you a seat. Happy to try to help grease the wheels with internal folks if you want to DM me more details. More on reddit.com

I am have a really hard time coming up with STAR stories for my upcoming interview on Wednesday. I've had a 4 days of prep time and only have two so far. My main focus has just been watching a bunch of interview prep videos and I've done a little studying on technical and mechanical knowledge.

My recruiter gave me which LP's the interviewers will be targeting which helps at least. Customer Obession, Dive Deep, Bias for Action, and Learn and Be Curious. I have two for bias for action but that's it so far. My brain is just like in a paralyzed state I guess from all the stress of what I have to prep for and it will be my first virtual interview so I've been stressing on getting that all set up and perfect. Any tips for STAR stories? Can they just be basic run of the mill or do they have to be extremely complex situations?

I think my perfectionism is really stunting me in a lot of ways here. I think I am looking for too perfect of an answer. I can't really use data because it's for EOT L3 role, most of my experience is hands on physical work, not at computer working on marketing/data/analytics, so I think it's harder to come up with good answers that incorporate metrics.

Can anyone offer some example STAR stories for EOT roles using the LP's I have or current EOT's that passed the loop? What behavioral and technical questions you got asked?

I gave the loop interview month back and received the following email after 5 days . Congratulations, following your Virtual On-Site Loop interview, I'm pleased to share you that the outcome appears to be very positive. The feedback from the team indicates a strong inclination towards moving forward. Currently, the team is in the process of discussing the next steps. I want to assure you that we are committed to keeping the momentum going. In the coming days, @email, will be reaching out to you directly to walk you through the offer process and address any questions or concerns you may have. After 5 days no one contacted me and so for my follow up email I got the following reply

Thanks for reaching out. @email will be reaching out to you soon with more information on next steps. But even after 10 days there is no update so I sent another email and this morning I received the following reply . Is it a polite rejection? If so why did they wait for so long and why did they give the hope initially ? Thank you for reaching out and for your continued interest in joining our team I appreciate your patience throughout this process. I wanted to update you that the specific role you interviewed for has been filled from our ongoing active candidate pipeline. However, we are actively recruiting for multiple positions within the same team. We are currently working for the new role to open up where we believe your skills and experience would be a great fit. Our goal is to potentially secure a position for you that aligns with your career aspirations.I will keep you updated as soon as we have further information or when a suitable opportunity arises. Your interest and candidacy remain a priority for us, and I look forward to hopefully moving forward with you soon. Thank you again for your understanding, and please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns. Please feel free to reach out if you have any immediate questions.

I sent another email with my questions about this new position and expected timeline but no reply at all Any one have this similar experience?

Not sure what is going on with your specific case, but one possible situation is that the position got filled, and they're trying to open a new position for you, but they need approval from higher ups So, I wouldn't stop looking for other jobs, but there's a good chance they will call back. OTOH, many teams are trying to reduce headcount, so I assume opening a position is a pain at this moment :)
