r/aws on Reddit: The AWS Marketplace for selling a SaaS product - yay or nay?
May 19, 2018 -
I have a client who wants to deploy his app to the AWS Marketplace with the benefits being that you get marketing visibility and AWS handles the billing for you.
But. . . I personally would never use it. I feel like I'd just purchase whatever service it is from the company directly and not go through Amazon. And I'm generally a big fan of AWS, but I really wouldn't even think of looking for a product there.
Anyone here listing their SaaS product on AWS Marketplace? Is it going well?

We list our SaaS in the marketplace but since AWS takes a cut of the revenue we typically push customers to work with us directly. It's really good for gov / public sector customers because they will have an Enterprise agreement with AWS that allows them to purchase from the marketplace without having to go through gov procurement. As soon as you try to go direct with a gov customer then they bring in procurement and your back to a 6+ month sales cycle.

Couple thoughts. I work with customers who list their SaaS products on the marketplace because it makes selling them direct easier. Meaning, their sales team can point and say ‘see our product is listed by Amazon and blessed by them’. Helps get around some IT buyer objections occasionally. Secondly, if you have an EDP with AWS, it will help you burn down that commitment as it counts towards your annual spend. I think the policy is changing to only 50% though, so less favorable now.
