Grain Mills Examined and Compared
Hello, I have an attachment for my kitchen aid. Am I able to run the ground flour back in there? From reading it looks like a 2nd pass is an option. I have been making some clunky bread with 1 pass, not much fine flour, but the loaf rises beautifully and tastes amazing. I am new to this, any help is appreciated. I am gluten free, but my husband is obsessed with this bread. Hopefully one day I get to try it. ... Hi Michelle, You can mill grain several times, When I was using the Kitchenaid attachment I would mill the grin fairly coarsely and then a second time as finely as it would manage.

Home Grain Mill Recommendations
My wife has been baking bread almost daily for the past five years or so and wants a home grain mill for Christmas. It's pricey ($800 USD), but the Mockmill 200 Pro has a 12-year residential warranty: https://breadtopia.com/store/mockmill-professional-200-grain-mill/ More info: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeMilledFlour/comments/1839rn3/comment/kaowlmd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 I've had mine for 3 years. I mostly do wheat flour, cornmeal, and rice flour with it. The mega-long warranty & improved internal hardware components will cover me for nearly the next decade of baking. My typical process is: Mill the flour (then either use it whole, sifted, or as a percentage with AP flour) Use the sourdough starter Use the overnight no-knead procedure Fresh bread every day for less than 10 minute's worth of effort to mill the flour, feed the sourdough starter, and create & bake the dough! Just bought wheat berries for the first time… What is the best grain mill?
Most grain mills are going to be loud i think. I have the mockmill 100. It works great and is compact. Definitely isn't quiet though. Sounds like many others have nutrimill. Not sure of the noise level on that. More on reddit.com

Flour Mill
“That different” is a personal assessment. For me, milling my own whole grain flour is 100% worth it. The difference is significant. Freshly milled grains taste better, brighter than from a bag. No comparison. Also, whole berries store for years rather than the months whole grain flour lasts. Buying in bulk is much cheaper. There’s a wider selection of whole berries than flour. Rye and especially corn are better freshly milled too. Corn especially just pops. I have the Mockmill 200. Works great at producing textures from barely cracked to superfine. More on reddit.com

Good flour grinder suggestions
Milling flour with a hand-crank mill is extremely slow and tedious. It takes so long, you can easily triple your effort for a single loaf of bread. I find the proposition completely untenable. Save up for the Mockmill. More on reddit.com

November 25, 2023 -

My wife has been baking bread almost daily for the past five years or so and wants a home grain mill for Christmas.

Probably a long shot, but does anyone on here have any thoughts or recommendations on what is the best out of the following home grain mills:

  • Mockmill

  • Nutrimill

  • Wondermill

  • Kokomo

I’m totally lost here! She mostly does sourdough stuff but sometimes ventures out to other, more yeasty stuff.

It’s no secret that fresh-milled flour is best for your health. As soon as flour is milled it begins to depreciate in nutritional value. In order for a flour to be shelf-stable, things have to be removed. Removal of the bran and the germ, for example, means we miss out on the bulk of the nutrients available in our grains. What to Know before Purchasing a Grain Mill/Flour Mill
January 17, 2024 - Manual grain mills require a good deal of time and endurance to operate, and these excel at coarse flour. Electric mills require power and are best for very-fine flour, like that used for pastry. One of our electric mills can even be used manually in the absence of power.
