So there are heaps of movies that people claim are the greatest movies of time and must see movies
Movies like
Gone with the win
E.T
close encounters of the third kind
Schindlers list
And the list goes on and on
What would be make the list of the greatest and must see horror films of all time?
There is literally well over 100 years of horror movies to choose from
Fun fact the 1898 movie house if the devil was start of the genre
I've got a complicated relationship with the horror genre. I actively avoid stuff that's disturbing/gory for the pure sake of it, while I consider The Thing (1982) and The Shining to be the bests of all time. World War Z is one of very few modern horror movies I've actually enjoyed and gone back to see twice. I haven't really found much else anywhere close to the first 2 in quality/storytelling though. Any ideas?

I know that lists are usually bad, but holy crap, this is reaaaaally bad.
List
First 5 places:
His House
Under the Shadow
The Wailing
Get Out
The Babadook
Most of these seem to be in the list by merits other than horror. His House and Under the Shadow are okay movies but completely forgettable and not scary in the slightest.
NY Times just did a top 100 Movies of the 21st Century, where they asked notable filmmakers for their 10 favorite of the century so far, and I'm curious what you all would put as your top 10 HORROR Movies of the 21st Century.
* Obviously it's just a snapshot of what we like at this very moment. But who doesn't like a little hyperbole?
Approximately every two years, we like to go back and re-evaluate our opinions on this matter. This year, we received so many entries and so many votes, it only made sense to expand the original Top 50 into a Top 100 list. (Thanks u/hail_freyr for the suggestion!)
You can see our past Top 50 lists at the Dreadit Movie Guide page (link also in the sidebar).
But, now it's time for our new list!

What's the highest ranking movie you still haven't seen yet? (Mine's Psycho.)
My friends and i have planned a horror movie night, only one has watched horror movies before. This friend wants to watch the Conjuring and Insidious as these are the only ones he heard of that were good and i want them to watch movies that scare them till they shit their pants or cry from existential horror.
As i said i know nothing about horror, thats why im asking the experts. I want to find 2 movies for them to never forget and please no comments about where we should start.
Ofcourse this is very objective as the best is something else for everyone, i personally dont think nuns and clowns are scary but rather just creepy so it would need a good story for me and not just jumpscares. Please feel free to tell me why i need us to watch your recommendation, love yall<3
Edit: my current List: •Hereditary •Henry: Portrait of a Killer •Midsommar •The Witch / VVitch •Sinister •Barbarian •The blair witch project •Martyrs •Evil Dead 2013 •Nosferatu
Barbarian or Martyrs are my favorites for ending the night because i read those are hardcore, Evil Dead looks fun to watch as well as Nosferatu and im trying to pick 2 of the rest for this evening. On one hand i dont want to scare them too hard that they wont do it again because i have gotten so many recommendations that we could do like 5 to 10 movie nights...on the other hand tho i want them to scream, jump from the couch or cry xd (i love my friend i swear)

This list isn’t the greatest thing I’ve ever seen but it isn’t the worst. Personally, Sinister is my pick for all time scariest but in no world can I see It breaking too 10.
What do you guys think?
Psycho
The Shining
The Exorcist
The Silence of the Lambs
Halloween
Alien & Aliens
The Sixth Sense
Jaws
The Thing
Rosemary's Baby
This is mine. What’s yours? I might eventually do a top 50.
I am looking for more to watch that I may not have seen. I personally think what I consider to be the absolute best in horror is Hereditary, Midsommar, 1408, Scream (the first one, not sure if this is considered the greatest movie so it may just be my bias for liking it haha), Psycho, The Shining, Nightmare on Elm Street (not a fan of anything past 2 tbh), Talk To Me, Incantation, and more.
edited to add a little more of my top favorite movies also wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions!
A few months ago I asked people to name worst horror movie they've ever seen and got a lot of responses. This time I'd like to know about your favorite or the best horror movie you've ever seen. The movie you never get tired of, the one that you'd recommend to any horror enthusiast.
In no particular order these are mine:
Drag me to Hell
Oculus
Evil Dead (2013)
Mama
Insidious 2 or Conjuring 2
Completely opinionated and debate would be cool
There's a lot that could go into this but basically in your opinion based off of story, cinematics, theme, score, tone as well as acting, directing, producing etc. What would be a horror movie you would say is damn near perfect or absolutely perfect. Reviews, critics, scores don't exist in this question, only based on what can be articulated to defend your answer. I'm very curious on the diversity of answers.
Hey, happy new year folks! I just wanted to see what everyone's tastes are like, and share my top 5 as well.
To keep this post helpful (and spoiler-free) for others, it would be best if you could reply with the names a 1 line reason for why you love the movie. Here's my all-time top 5:
Gonjiam Haunted Asylum - I love how the horror scenes are drawn out
The Wailing - The suspense and the ending are top notch.
Heriditary - Probably the best horror scenes I've seen in a movie.
Rosemary's Baby - It made me spend the entire movie at the edge of my seat.
Tumbbad - This is probably the only Indian horror movie worth watching, gripping storyline.
I generally love found footage and folk horror, so if I had a top 10 then it they would have many more of that subgenre.
I'm just a horror enthusiast, apologies if I have terrible taste!
Aterrados/Terrified (2017)
Gonjiam Haunted Asylum (2018)

All time favorite horror movies? I’m talking the ones you’ll always rewatch, recommend, or think about long after the credits roll. Could be classic slashers, psychological horror, found footage, paranormal, foreign films, or something totally underrated. What scared you the most, stuck with you the longest, or just hits every time no matter how many times you’ve seen it?
What the title says. I think the best horror movie I’ve seen so far, in terms of narration, actors, soundtracks attention to details and fear, is The Exorcist (1973). Basic, I know, but I’ve seen it lately for the first time and I was shocked by how horrifying it was, still, after more than 50 years of existence.
I’m trying to dive deep into the genre, so if feel free to share your magnum opus of horror ! It can be totally subjective.
Update : some of you noticed that you can make the distinction between the best and your favorite, and you’re totally right ! The best would still be the exorcist , and my fav would be the Vvitch/Get out (can’t choose)
My most recent favorite is Saint Maude !! So great
