Underwater (2020) was an incredible sci fi thriller, and should have been rated better.

I think the main reason I loved this film was because it starts almost immediately.

There's less than 10 minutes of pre-disaster in this disaster movie, and I want that trend to continue. We immediately jump into "things are bad" and I was instantly invested as a result.

Also turned into a great character writing exercise because there was no 30 minutes of "meet the cast" beforehand, so every bit of characterization had to happen during the events of the movie and it was interesting as hell.

‘The Hater’ (2020) is an acclaimed Polish thriller that was only on USA Netflix for a day before being pulled. Is this normal?
Wow! I watched the whole thing the day it came out. It was an incredible and powerful movie. Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if they pulled it off the US market because it’s so violent. Seems like everything that’s been coming out on Netflix is super watered down with no substance and is extra G rated. It’s unfortunate there is a decline of non cookie cutter content lately. Instead we get stupid series like a travel show with Zac Effeon “PG” More on reddit.com

[US] Time to Hunt (2020) - In this Korean thriller, a group of friends plans a heist to escape their bleak future. Unfortunately for them, the heist draws the attention of a ruthless mercenary who will stop at nothing to kill them.
This is a pretty gritty, slow-burning thriller. The action and violence is all well done in my opinion, the film does an excellent job of ramping up the suspense and tension and creating a villain who feels sufficiently ruthless and unstoppable. There were a lot of points where the film reminded me of No Country For Old Men. Much like No Country, the majority of the movie is a long cat and mouse game where the protagonists have a duffle bag full of money stolen from a criminal enterprise and are being relentlessly chased by a mysterious, almost supernaturally gifted, killer who has his own strange moral code and methods. It might not be the most original set-up but it's one I particularly enjoy and didn't mind seeing again here. The imagining of a bleak, near-future Korea, the slums and seedy underbelly aspects are all really well done here too. Sure, there are some moments where things happen that were totally convenient for the plot and unrealistic, two that immediately jump to my mind are how the killer goes through the trouble of catching them, has them dead-to-rights in the parking garage and just lets them go, extending the chase for another hour before the deus-ex machina of the arms dealer twin brother saves the day. The other big one for me was how three young men storm a hospital, complete with bullet proof vests on and a man who has been shot, and yet the police are never called. I think there has to be a way the whole hospital scene could've been written to solve both of these issues. Like, speed up the timeline, have it where the police are called when the friends arrive but are held up and the police arrival at the hospital is what allows the boys to slip away when the killer has them dead to rights . It's a total stretch but as long as you don't mind that and can go along for the ride, it's a fun film for what it is. More on reddit.com

November 28, 2020 - Dysfunctional families are a key theme in quite a few of this year’s standout psychological thrillers, including Lucy Atkins’s wonderfully atmospheric Oxford-set Magpie Lane (Quercus); Our Fathers (Riverrun), Rebecca Wait’s harrowing tale of family annihilation on a remote Scottish island; and Marion Brunet’s award-winning Summer of Reckoning (Bitter Lemon, translated from French by Katherine Gregor), which takes place in a Provence that holidaymakers never see, where poverty, boredom and casual racism are the norm.

March 5, 2024 -

I would like to watch some more recent thrillers since I have watched so many of the older ones already.

Examples of recent thillers I have watched that I loved:

Watcher (2022)

Fresh (2022)

I don't really like horror. I prefer suspenseful and psychological movies.

Thank you

Edit: Thank you guys so much for these suggestions, I'm loving all of these!

Between the second season of FX's hit show The Bear and the release of Mark Mylod's comedic horror thriller, the phrase "Yes chef!" was a staple of the early 2020s. The Menu is a single-location thriller that takes place in a lavish, upscale restaurant that exclusively serves the ultra-wealthy with demanding palates.
