What is the frequency response of the AirPods Pro 2?
Through the bass and mids, the AirPods Pro (2nd gen) closely follows our house curve and only makes significant deviations above 8kHz. Most listeners won’t be too bothered by the relative under-emphasis (compared to our house curve) in the uppermost octave. Harmonic detail may be harder to hear during particularly busy segments in your favorite tracks, but we prefer this to the alternative.
How much noise does the AirPods Pro 2 attenuate?
Though the isolation is nothing to write home about, the ANC will destroy between 20-30dB of outside noise, depending on the frequency. That’s a respectable result for ANC earbuds, and this product should be well suited for commutes, air travel, or casual listening in a noisy environment.
Why consider alternatives to the AirPods Pro 2?
While the AirPods Pro 2 offers great integration with Apple devices, there are reasons to explore the alternatives:
- Better value for money from competitors
- More customization options, especially for sound EQ
- Potentially better fit for some users
- Support for higher quality codecs when used with non-Apple devices
- Wider device compatibility beyond the Apple ecosystem

Airpods Pro are likely the best option for iPhone users as iOS is made for it and work best with them. Using other stuff will not be as seamless, may not connect automatically and may have downsides (such as latency or connection issues).
Consider the Sony WF-1000XM4 as they are considered by many to be the best wireless earbuds but third party earbuds/headphones may have issues on Apple devices. Apple devices also have a lack of higher quality Bluetooth codecs so they cannot use LDAC (or on a lesser note, Aptx) even if the headphones/earbuds themselves support it.
I love the sound of the Sony wf-xm4 buds, I like them more than some of my IEMs, they have great features and effective ANC. Since you mentioned mic quality you should probably check out the Technics az60, they get a lot of praise for the mics and call quality. They can also be connected to two devices simultaneously which the Sony can't. I have not heard them but there are a several reviews up. They have a similar price as the Sony.
I tried AirPods Max but think they are too over-priced and do not support lossless. Any other recommendations? AirPods pro are relatively outdated too. I do not mind wired options as sound quality is important. I do like the sound quality boost from spatial audio (apple tech). A few I was looking at:

I tried Sennheiser HD 560 S and was not a fan of the comfort or sound - I found the sound tiring and the volume low. Also not a fan of the Sony XM3/4s as the sound is too muddy
Any advice is appreciated.
At first i was looking at the 2nd Gen AirPod pros but then I’ve heard that cheaper earbuds beat it if we’re talking about sound quality. Ive also heard that the mic quality is disappointingly bad for the price.
Then I found Beats Studio Pro + and the reviews seem to be inconsistent. One review says that its not as good as the Airpods and the other says its much better. The mic quality is also an issue for the beats, apparently.
In other words, I want to know if anything here is true and if either earbud is worth buying, or if i should get something else instead.
Also, does Hi-Res even matter on an Earbud? Does it work with iPhones/Apple Music?
Any suggestions?
I've got an iPhone 13, and I would love to get a set of actual wired earbuds for them. However, every pair I've bought recently sets up a Bluetooth connection, which is precisely what I don't want. It seems they're only using the plug for power.
Do they even still make true wireless earbuds for iPhone? Is it even possible any more?
