This is not a Dell-specific problem. Microsoft can push BIOS updates through Windows Update, not just on Surface devices but on computers from other manufacturers. I've seen it happen on Dell, HP, ASUS and Lenovo laptops and desktops. I avoid these Firmware updates from Windows Update and go to the PC manufacturer to get the BIOS update from them. In Dell's case, I use Dell (Command) Update to install BIOS updates. I have not seen a single computer bricked by Windows Update installing BIOS updates but have seen Bitlocker drives freak out and prompt for the recovery key after a BIOS update installed by Windows. FYI: If you ever decide to switch to Linux because of this, know that Linux distros can push BIOS updates too. You'd need to do research on distros and find out one that lets you turn off BIOS updates or does not support this feature at all. More on reddit.com

Hi, I bought a dell precision laptop recently which is a few years old but expensive.
I was trying to install its drivers when I saw latest bios drivers, it was 13mb so I downloaded and installed it.
Everything went smooth and bios updated to the latest version but now I am seeing a lot of posts of people saying never to update bios as it will ruin your computer.
Please tell me if my computer is now at any kind of risk of getting damaged.
I am literally extremely worried as if I made a mistake by doing something I shouldnt have done
People are saying never udate bios unless there are severe issues with computer and here I am updating my bios for literally no reason.
