r/Menieres on Reddit: Bone conduction headphones and vertigo
December 31, 2022 -

Hey all!

I don't know why I didn't think to join earlier but I've been experiencing Meniere's like symptoms on and off for 3 years with a soft diagnosis by my ENT mid last year. I've had a hard time with headohones since.

Prior to Meniere's, I wore headphones more than not, but now I almost never use them. I've seen a few mentions of bone conduction (BC) headphones being good for people in this subreddit but the warnings online that BC can cause vertigo is off-putting to say the least.

I'd love to hear from people with and without Meniere's whether they find BC has made their symptoms worse or if they were unaffected.

I have partial hearing loss but I know that the hearing loss is internal and won't be bypassed by using BC. Just want to use other experiences to guage the risk of triggering my symptoms.

Thanks!

Bone conduction headphones and vertigo
I started using Aftershokz Aeropex bone conduction headphones a little over a year ago when my Meniere’s went bilateral. I can’t use over/on-ear headphones or sound-isolating in-ear without having Meniere’s problems. I love the bone conduction. The sound quality is a bit different. It took one or two days to get used to them, but they’ve never caused me Meniere’s problems, even in those first couple days. They vibration against your head/jaw feels weird at first, but then you stop noticing it unless you have the volume cranked all the way up. My jaw had a very minor ache for the first afternoon while getting used to them, but that hasn’t happened since then. If my hearing is fluctuating or my ears feel full, but I’m not having vertigo yet, I usually feel agitated. In those times, I’ll often put them on and listen to an audiobook or podcast. It helps me feel less agitated. With bone conduction headphones, the cheaper brands or first couple generations have much worse sound quality than the better brands/newer models. I tried 2 other options (one from amazon and one that was an older, wired model from Aftershokz). I decided the Aeropex model was worth the cost. More on reddit.com

TIFU by running with bone conduction headphones, now I have tinnitus
Hey, I've had tinnitus for the last 10 years. It sucks, and it may even get worse. But the one thing I can tell you is that you get used to it. On the few bad days the tinnitus will seem overwhelming, but most of the time you will hopefully not even notice it. It almost becomes part of the everyday background noise, after a while. I know it's not any heartening advice, but you will get used to it. Stay safe and use earplugs at the club! More on reddit.com

Are bone conduction headphones worth it?

They're great! Certainly not audiophile quality, but for some background tunes while still being fully aware of your surroundings, it's a great option.

I have the older AfterShokz Trekz Titanium.

Bone Conduction vs Awareness Mode
Bone conduction is so comfortable I will frequently forget that I have them on. It’s not particularly useful in high-noise areas like indoor gyms, but if running outside it’s really nice. More on reddit.com

New innovation improves the diagnosis of dizziness
September 10, 2018 - "Thanks to this bone conduction technology, the sound levels which patients are exposed to can be minimised. The previous test was like a machine gun going off next to the ear—with this method it will be much more comfortable. The new vibrating device provides a maximum sound level of 75 decibels. The test can be performed at 40 decibels lower than today's method using air-conducted sounds through headphones.
