r/sonos on Reddit: [Review] Bose Ultra Smart Soundbar + Base Module 700 + Surround 700s vs Sonos Arc + Sub + 2x Era 300
December 24, 2023 -

I am testing both surround systems at the moment.

  1. Sonos Arc + Sub + 2x Era 300s with trueplay (iPhone 15 Pro) setup in a 18'x18'x8' room.

  2. Bose Ultra Smart Soundbar + Base Module 700 + Surround 700s with ADAPTiQ.

A couple of observations:

  • The Arc sounds incredible for watching Atmos Content — specifically TV shows and movies. The Bose also sounds good, but the dialogs aren't as clear, and the surround isn't as punchy — still a very good system.

  • Sonos was easier to setup in the apartment. I hate that Bose requires you to screw in the wires from the reciever of the surrounds. I can understand how other people might want to custom wire their setups, but as a consumer looking for a plug-and-play home theater, that was annoying.

  • Both Apps suck.

    • Setup

      • Sonos Setup was excellent. Much better than the Bose. The Bose app is pretty buggy while connecting to the speakers and the UX is just garbage. It's crazy how Bose markets that you should pair the soundbar with other specific speakers but didn't build a one-click setup process.

      • Bose has less streaming options

      • Sonos buries the settings for your setup, it's kind of annoying. Bose highlights your setup on the home screen and lets you play with the EQ. More controls on the Bose app to tweak the level of the soundbar compared to the surrounds. Sonos only lets you tweak the surrounds.

  • PCM music from the TV sounds terrible on both, but Bose does a much better job of improving the sound to make it bearable. My Macbook Pro 14" makes the same PCM content sound 100x better. It's frustrating because half the content on Spotify & Apple Music isn't encoded in better formats. When I listen to music on my Airpods or on the Mac speakers, you don't notice the quality drop. On the Arc and Bose, you can immediately tell the quality has dropped.

  • Music, (Atmos, Dolby 5.1, PCM) all sound better on the Bose. The soundbar's soundstage is more engineered towards music. It feels familiar like all other Bose speakers. The Sonos makes vocals sound very boxy, and slightly echo-y. I removed surrounds on both and the results were the same. It was incredibly annoying to have this distinction given that the Sonos sounds soo good for TV content. :( I must have tested 20-30 different songs with different ranges, with friends and family, and all the same result. I've tested both in different apartments as well.

  • The Bose costed me $2200, the Arc setup costed me $2000 with Thanksgiving offers. It's annoying that the Bose surrounds can't be used as separate speakers. I can still use the Era 300s as stand alone speakers, and for $2000 I am getting a lot of smart speakers that can work together.

  • I like that the Bose comes with a remote, but I rarely use it given that most of those controls work from the Apple TV remote.

  • I wish Sonos had a more EQ controls. I get that the sound profile works for most people, but it's crazy to think that there is a single "scientific" best way to listen to content. I am okay with Sonos prescribing how Atmos content should sound in your room, but I want more controls for Music.

My 1 year experience with the Bose Soundbar 900 and why I would not buy it again
To piggy back on this, there are a few TVs that specifically work horrendously with some of the Bose Soundbars. Notably a couple of the LG oled models and ton of the Samsung TVs. I have the Ultra soundbar and it was a nightmare getting the thing to work reliably. The issue comes mainly from HDMI CEC functionality where the TV and the soundbar are fucking up their handshake. Imagine you go to give a buddy a fist bump but he extends his hand out for a handshake. You both then switch, you go for the handshake and your buddy the fist bump. You both laugh and then both switch again. This goes on for eternity between the two. That's literally what's happening. Of course both the TV company and Bose point fingers at the other one saying that they fucked it up when it's the fact both need to just fucking sit down and get their shit together to work right. I still don't know exactly what I did, but on one of the power cycles everything synced up and worked reliably between my LG oled and the soundbar. Reliably is the keyword because I had so many issues with it in the past where it would work but then fail after switching inputs or some other ridiculous little thing that should never have fucked up the handshake. That being said, my samsung TV is a fucking nightmare. It fucks up with my xbox, it fucks up with Bose, it fucks up with playstation, airplay, and anything that's not samsung. I don't know what happened to that company but I always went with Samsung when I could. Even my fucking refrigerator is samsung. Now when I hear that name I practically get ptsd flashbacks. Companies need to start paying attention because they are losing lifelong customers. I've had tons of Bose sound systems over the last 20 years ever since I was blown away by a demo in Best Buy in my late teens. I'm sure as fuck going to reconsider the next time I need a sound system though because I'm also paying for the convenience and ease of use, which gets a little worse every new iteration. Upgrading my Bose Smart Soundbar 300
Subwoofer makes a massive difference as you gave the correct driver playing the correct frequencies. You can also place it better in the room. I would say go straight for the BM700, it's a good subwoofer with plenty of power and goes a fair bit deeper (25hz) than the bm500 (45hz) I can't speak for everyone, but I haven't had any issues, although my subwoofer is only 3/4 feet from the bar with nothing in-between. They're likely the exact same product just renamed to align with there product lines. Only you can decide this. But the soundtouch 300 is identical to the soundbar 700 and that's pretty much Bose's halo product minus the Atmos. The st300 will be a vast improvement, but only you can decide if it's worth it. Can't comment as I don't have any experience with them. More on reddit.com

My compare and contrast between Sonos Arc and Bose Soundbar 900
Update: We've had the Bose for close to 5 months now and it's working great. We've not had any issues since the initial problem of having to force an update. All subsequent updates have occurred automatically. Our kids use the system a lot for movies. They really like the sound and also that it's simple for them to use. Turn on the TV, find the movie they wanna watch, adjust the volume on the system and watch. When we first got it, my wife really liked the sound and look, but said it wasn't necessary for her. Now she uses it as much as the kids for movies and music. She's even commented a couple of times on how immersive the system is. I was thinking of adding the surround 700 speakers, but I'd want to ceiling mount them. The ceiling in our TV room is only 8', so they'd really stick out. I'd also want to hide the brick sized wireless transmitters, which would be a pain in our room. Given how much everyone likes the setup as is, I'll probably skip the surrounds. If Bose comes out with a newer surround speaker, I might change my mind. More on reddit.com

[Review] Bose Ultra Smart Soundbar + Base Module 700 + Surround 700s vs Sonos Arc + Sub + 2x Era 300
Thanks for the detailed reviews. I’m also disappointed at the lack of EQ on Sonos. Competitors like the Eversolo and Wiim devices all have detailed EQ settings. Even if they’re somewhat gimmicky, they are a great option to have More on reddit.com

Can you connect a subwoofer to a Bose soundbar?

All the best Bose soundbars in this guide are compatible with the Bose Bass Module 500 and Bass Module 700. These subwoofers can connect wirelessly, letting you place them wherever they sound best (as long as they're near a power outlet). You can also use a wired connection if you prefer.

Bose Smart Soundbar 900 with Dolby Atmos, It Really Works? | AVForums
October 10, 2021 - This is the exact soundbar I am after and have looked here with very few responses. Samsung and LB both seem way too buggy to me with issues with wifi, connectivity and generally buggy user reports. This leaves me with either Sonos or Bose. I used to have a Bose 300 with rear speakers and sub and loved it so am hoping this is going to be the replacement when they land here in Australia.

r/bose on Reddit: My 1 year experience with the Bose Soundbar 900 and why I would not buy it again
November 8, 2023 -

So, it's been nearly a year now with my bose soundbar 900 and one of the main reasons for buying it was it's sleek design and of course the Dolby atmos functionality. Knowing Bose for good quality and good sound in general I bought it right away when it was on sale last year.

Although the sound is indeed very good, the one issue I continuously have is that it simply loses connection to whatever it claims to work with.

I stopped using it's "smart" feature just a few months after I bought it because it lost wifi connection (with the router being 2 meters in front of it). And no, doing a proper update of the soundbar never helped.

It also still randomly loses connection to my Samsung TV which it is connected to via hdmi arc. The only annoying way to make it work again is to disconnect the power cable and connect it back again. Until it loses connection in a few days again. Great. The best part is that there is not even a "restart this damn device" functionality via the remote, so you have to fucking disconnect the power cable.

This has been going for nearly a year now and I am extremely pissed off that I spent (wasted) hundreds of euros for such a unreliable soundbar.

This is just a warning for anyone who wants to buy one of these. I am aware that there are also people out there with no issues with the soundbar, congratulations to you lucky people. I just wanted to share my experience, since there is no review functionality on the bose page (maybe for a reason), where I bought my soundbar from.

Cheers.
